Random Morning Thoughts

Gratitude Month, day 18: I know you guys are all tired of hearing about how I don’t like beer. Well, today I am grateful for not liking beer, for not caring much for wine, and for not having a desire to drink much. You folks drink for me, except on those rare occasions when I get a wild hair, have a drink, and am immediately wasted. I’ll eat all your chocolate while you drink all my beer.

Awesome Temira-approved Local Business

Mt. Hood Snow Rain Forecast

(insert long string of expletives)

There was a funny conversation on Facebook last night after Meadows posted a photo of the radar image and said it was snowing. Someone replied with “I hope Temira Lital is wrong about the forecast,” to which I replied, “Temira hopes she’s wrong too,” eliciting 8 likes. Temira giggled, because it amuses her to speak in the third person.

Sadly, Temira was not wrong, and it rained 2” at Meadows, Timberline and Skibowl last night, instead of snowing two feet. I was almost too irritated to look at the precip model this morning. Anyway, the snow level is theoretically 7500′ right now, but judging by the sleet on the Cascade cam, it’s higher. The snow level will drop to 6500′ by 10am and then plummet to 1500′ by 4pm. We’ll see .2-.5” water value (WV) today before this slow-moving system exits through the gift shop. Then we’ll see clear sky overnight, turning the rain-soaked snowpack into an ice skating rink. Wind today will be W 35 early, 40 midday, and WNW 35 in the afternoon, swinging to ENE overnight.

Wednesday starts off clear, with the free air freezing level (FAF) at 500′, falling to the surface in some areas during the day. Wind will be ENE 10 in the morning, becoming NE 20 midday.

It looks wicked cold, but clear, on Thursday, with the FAF at the surface early, rising to 500′ in the afternoon. Wind will be NE 15-20. The next chance of precipitation is nowhere to be seen on the models. Enjoy the sunshine.

Plain Old Local Weather

I’m making grumbling faces as I write this, although the grumble-causing weather should slide south before long. Expect cloudy, rainy conditions this morning. Then this afternoon, expect clearing skies and dropping temps.

Tomorrow, well, are we going to see the Nothing or clear sky? The sounding model suggests some low clouds tomorrow morning, followed by clear sky on Thursday as the air mass dries out. But. There’s a catch. It’s going to be frigid: Expect Gorge temps to hover right around freezing on Wednesday and to start off in the mid-twenties on Thursday, warming to the mid-thirties Thursday afternoon. And temps should warm up for the rest of the week. Two-day cold snap. Exciting. Fur coat is coming out for sure.

If you have sensitive plants living outside, bring them in today. It’s time.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Today may be starting off gloomy and wet, but it’s also starting off with .04/.05 gradients. As this front passes this afternoon (and temps drop 10-15 degrees), we’ll see westerlies pick up to 15-18 near Hood River with 23-26 east of Mosier. If you’d like to die of hypothermia, you can sail sub-freezing east wind on Wednesday and Thursday, or you can hold out for warmer easterlies later in the week. I’m refusing to post wind speed predictions for those sub-freezing days.

Road and Mountain Biking

OMG the Syncline was perfect yesterday. I am sure it is wet now, but wow. I’m going to get through today on the memories of yesterday.

You want meat? We got meat. $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tonight. Those folks were so pleased with my hunk-of-meat pushing that they hired me to push their other meats. This amuses me. But joking aside, I really do love hanging out there. The food is good, the atmosphere is good, and they have couches. There’s something lovely about sitting on couches and eating, maybe because it feels like breaking the rules?

If you prefer to exercise tonight, there’s pickup rugby at Collins Field in Hood River (across from Jackson Park) at 5:30pm. Or you could exercise and then go eat meat.

Coming up tomorrow night, it’s the last night of Kayak Polo, unless you kayak folks pull your wallets out and start kicking down some cash. Also tomorrow, there’s free/donation Karma Yoga at 4pm at Flow.

Have an awesome day today!

Gratitude Month, day 17: Today I am grateful to all the people who taught me to cook delicious things as a filthy-mouthed line cook. Why? Because being able to cook for people is a beautiful gift. Jacques, Kirby, Johnson, Terry, Ben, Pete, Mike, Christiaan, Mark, Matt, Robin, and all the rest, thank you. And thanks to Maui for letting me be a feisty, filthy-mouthed line cook.

Mt. Hood Snow Rain Forecast

It’s still cloudy and snowing on Mt. Hood this morning, and that’s a lovely thing. The snow level is around 4500′ this morning, and will fall to 4000′ midday, before rising to, well, somewhere between 6000′ and 8000′ overnight, and falling back to 6000′ by Monday morning. We’ll see .2” water value (WV) today, for 1-2” of snow. Wind will be WSW 25-35.

Monday starts off cloudy and calm, but that won’t last. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 6500′ around 1pm, and 7500′ from 7pm on through the night. We’ll see a snow/rain/sleet/freezing rain mix starting around 1pm, switching to rain pretty quickly. Models currently show around 1” WV between 1pm Monday and 4am Tuesday, but I suspect they are underestimating the rainfall amounts. Anyway, it’s going to be wet and not white at ski area base elevations. Wind on Monday will be SW 20 early, 40 mid-afternoon and 50 overnight.

Tuesday sees the snow level at 7500′ early, dropping to 5500′ after 4pm and crashing overnight, after the precipitation stops (of course, right?). Now, it looks like Tuesday’s precip will come from a nearly-stationary system, meaning precip amounts could vary widely depending on where the system sets up. Since it’s going to be rain, let’s hope it doesn’t set up over Mt. Hood. So, no rainfall amounts for you for now. Wind will be WSW 50 early, dropping to 30 by 4pm.

Remember yesterday’s discussion of lack of model consensus? As of today, the models are starting to agree on something completely different: a dry, two-day cold snap on Wednesday and Thursday, with temps below freezing in the Gorge and in the teens on the hill, possibly followed by another wet system next weekend (or not – the GFS precip model shows dry weather through next Sunday).

Plain Old Local Weather

It’s wet, duh. Look outside your window, and you’ll see gray sky, hovering low clouds, and dripping trees. Puddle-covered pavement. Soggy grass. Spray rising from car tires. And it’ll stay cloudy and showery today, but not so wet that you’ll abhor the outdoors. Just sprinkles today. Get your outside action early tomorrow, because the downpour starts around noon or 1pm and continues through Tuesday.

In interesting weather news, models are coming to a consensus on a very chilly Wednesday and Thursday here in the Gorge. Temps will be near, right at, or below freezing for the two day period. No precipitation with the cold snap, sadly, so no skiing on Burdoin Mountain. But maybe, just maybe, it will be cold enough to ride frozen trails, one of my favorite things!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Wow. Kudos to the kiters out in the pouring rain at the Event Site yesterday, and kudos to everyone else who caught some of that ripping wind in the desert. Today starts out light, picking up to gusty 13-15 in the western gorge and gusty 21-24 east of Mosier this afternoon. Tomorrow brings easterlies at 10-15, and then tomorrow night, after dark, we’ll see another round of westerlies at 30-40. The westerlies will likely fade to the upper teens by Tuesday morning, leaving us in light west wind for the rest of the day.

Road and Mountain Biking

Biking just sounds really wet right now. Maybe it’s better in The Dalles?
