Awesome news this morning courtesy of Janice T: ODOT will start repaving Highway 35 between Neal Creek Road and the Mt. Hood Ranger station on April 15th. That sucks if you have to commute along that section of road, but it’s fantastic news if you’re tired of riding ¾ minus chip seal on your bike. Hooray, ODOT!

Next, don’t forget about the Seven Streams tree planting party tomorrow morning at 9am. Meet at the bottom of Post Canyon Road. Bring a shovel and gloves. In other weekend news, tomorrow is the Ski to Defeat ALS at Mt. Hood Meadows. Sunday is Ski Free day at Skibowl. Just show up, and they’ll hand you a ticket, and you can ride for free. Park at Skibowl West for the best terrain and best nearby nachos.

In weather news, spring/summer/warm weather is now officially on vacation. Gorge weather starts with mid 30’s today, rising to upper 40’s this afternoon under clear sky that becomes overcast midday. Wind will be light until noon or so, then picking up to gusty 24-27, steadiest at Stevenson and Arlington, but probably not worth the drive way out east.

Tomorrow brings our first dawn patrol of the season, likely 30-35 from Mosier to Doug’s. The wind fills in to 28-32+ from Doug’s to Arlington by late morning. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and mid 40’s late. If the sky clears overnight, expect frost in the upper valley. If it doesn’t, expect snow flurries in the upper valley with sunbreaks all day. The central Gorge will likely be partly cloudy all day, with a few sprinkles.

Sunday looks partly cloudy in the central Gorge with sun out east. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and mid-40’s late, with frost in the upper valley. It will be windy east of Hood River, but we’ll have to wait a day to see just how strong. Monday looks similar to Sunday.

On Mt. Hood today, we’ll have sunshine to start, overcast sky midday and sprinkles/freezing rain starting around 5pm. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 6500′ mid-morning, 7000′ in the evening, and 5000′ at 11pm, falling to 500′ by Saturday morning. Brrr. We’ll see .3-.5” water value (WV) after 5pm, for 1-2” of new snow, at best, but likely just a trace. Wind will be W 10 early, SW 20 late morning, and W 35-40 after 5pm.

Saturday sees orographic snow flurries all day. The snow level will be at 500-1000′, with .2-.3” WV during the day, for a couple inches of new snow. Another .2-.4” WV will fall after 5pm, for another 2-4” by Sunday morning. Wind Saturday will be WNW 45-50 early, dropping to WNW 35-40 mid-morning and holding.

Sunday starts clear, with orographic flurries possible, and heavier snowfall after 5pm. The snow level will be 1000′ early and 1500′ in the evening. We’ll see .3-.5” WV overnight, for 3-5” by Monday morning. Wind Sunday will be NW 25-30 early, 20-25 mid-morning, and 10-15 in the late afternoon.

Ah… so yesterday I meant to say you could get your discounted Port of Hood River parking passes starting May 1st. I have no idea why you can’t get them yet, but you can’t. So… my apologies for those of you who jumped on that bit of misinformation.

Next, I don’t know where the windsurfers and kiters were yesterday, but they weren’t at Arlington, where it was 3.5 with okay swell. They also weren’t at Rufus or The Wall when I drove by at 6pm. It was sub-3.0 there with big waves. Maybe they were mountain biking, although the trails were likely too muddy… speaking of mountain biking: if Post Canyon dries out, the Post and Pint is a go. Meet at 5:30 at Dirty Fingers (call before to see if it’s on). If you complete the ride, you earn free beer. (yuck. Beer.)

You may want to do a wind sport instead of riding today. It appears the marine layer is past HR this morning, so you’ll want to be somewhere between Mosier and John Day Dam this afternoon for relatively steady 28-32mph. Temps will be in the mid 40’s this morning and low 50’s this afternoon.

Tomorrow starts with clear sky and temps in the low 40’s, rising to the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Wind will be light until about 11am, when it will pick up to gusty W 21-24. We’ll see some sprinkles overnight, with flurries possible in the wee hours above 1000′.

If you live above 500′, you’ll likely see frost or flurries on Saturday morning, depending on when the sky clears. Temps at river level will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s in the afternoon. Wind will be… NUKING out of the west, especially early, but holding in the nearly-nuking category all afternoon east of The Dalles. Don’t forget about the Seven Streams tree planting party at 9am.

Sunday looks clear and chilly, with frost above 500′ and west wind at 24-28.

On Mt. Hood, it’s currently rather … icy, as it rained an inch yesterday and then temps dropped into the low 20’s. It will be clear this morning, with high clouds this afternoon and flurries tonight with no accumulation. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1000′ early and 2500′ later, with NNW wind at 10-15.

Tomorrow starts clear, becoming overcast midday. The FAF will be 2000′ early and 6500′ after 11am. Looks like we’ll see rain or freezing rain after 11pm, with .2-.4” falling by Saturday morning, with a chance of some flurries at the end of the precip. Wind Friday will be W 10 early, SW 15 midday and SW 30 in the evening, becoming W 50 overnight as the front passes.

Now, I prefer the strongest wind to happen between 7am and 10am, because it makes my life more interesting, but it looks like the strongest wind will be overnight. At 5am Saturday, the snow level will be at a stunning less-than-1000′, slowly rising to 2000′ Saturday afternoon. There will be orographic snow flurries during the day, with heavier snow overnight dropping .2-.4” by Sunday morning for a couple inches of new snow (sorry, Parkdale). Wind Saturday will be W 40-50 early, dropping to WNW 30-35 at 11am and W 40 at 5pm.

Sunday looks cold with a few flurries and WNW wind at 20-25. Sunday, remember, is Ski Free Day at Skibowl – last day of the season there.
