Mt. Hood snow, Gorge wind, and events

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

Thank you to everyone who showed up for the Seven Streams tree planting party yesterday. We planted over 500 trees along the trail corridor and in the riparian zone. If you’re riding along this summer and you see a little tree along the trail, give it a squirt from your water bottle!

Missed the party yesterday? There’s a work party today on the Gorge’s most awesome trail: The Whoopdee. Join Steve Dunn (whose selfless volunteer efforts over the last several years have resurrected this trail and made it awesome) at 9am. Meet at the flat field on the east side of Old Dalles Road between the Whoopdee exit and Whoopdee entrance. And make sure that next time you see Steve, you tell him how awesome his trail is. Or just email him: hoodriverdunn@gmail.com

Today is also Ski Free day at Skibowl. Never been there? Today’s your chance to try it at no risk. It’s just 15 minutes past Meadows, so give it a try today!

Good morning,

First off today, the weekend announcements: Today is the Seven Streams tree planting work party. Meet at the bottom of Post Canyon Road at 9am to help us get a jump on reforestation along everyone’s favorite trail. Tomorrow is Ski Free day at Skibowl. Also tomorrow, Steve Dunn has a work party on Whoopdee Trail tomorrow morning at 9am. Meet at the flat field on the left between the Whoopdee exit and the Whoopdee entrance.

Speaking of Whoopdee, if anyone has any information about the death of the friendly/killer grouse that lived along the climb, we’d like to hear about it.

In windsurfing/kiting news, it’s nuking. At 5am, it was blowing 34 at Doug’s, with a .15 gradient from PDX-DLS and another .12 out east. That’ll give us westerlies in the 30-40 range all day today from Lyle to Arlington, with lighter, gustier wind in the central Gorge. As this low pressure system moves east, however, it may kick off some t-storms in the desert, affecting far-east wind, so your best bet is likely Doug’s/Rowena/Maryhill/Rufus. Temps today will rise to the upper 40’s.

Temps tomorrow will dip into the upper 30’s early, rising to the low 50’s in the afternoon with partly cloudy sky in the western Gorge and sun out east. Wind will be 28-32 from Mosier-Doug’s early, backing off to 21-24 in the afternoon. Watch for frost tomorrow morning if the sky clears overnight.

Monday looks partly cloudy to sunny. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 50’s in the afternoon with west wind at 21-24. Tuesday looks sunny with light wind.

On Mt. Hood, semi-winter continues. Today brings heavy snow flurries, with the snow level at 1000′ early and 1500′ in the afternoon. We’ll see .2-.4” water value (WV) today for 2-4” of snow by 4pm. Another .1-.3” falls overnight, for a couple more inches. Wind will be WNW 30-35 all day.

Tomorrow sees orographic flurries all day, with sunbreaks and no accumulation during the day. The snow level will be less than 1000′ early, rising to 2000′ in the afternoon. Overnight into Monday, .2-.3” WV falls, for 1-3” of new snow. Wind Sunday will be NW 25 early, slowly dropping to NW 10-15 by the afternoon.

Monday sees light flurries and lots of sunbreaks. The snow level will be 2000′, and wind will be NW 10 early and NE 10 in the afternoon. Tuesday looks clear, with the freezing level at 3000′, and NE/N wind increasing throughout the day.

Have an awesome day today!
