Earth Day sun, wind and no-snow forecast, but great biking is here!

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

Today’s the 22nd of April, Earth Day, and that means that last frost date has passed for Hood River city proper. The Heights has another week, and those of you in Parkdale have another few weeks. That said, keep an eye on the temps tonight, because there’s a pretty decent chance of frost in the wee hours, as clear sky allows temps to cool.

In events this week, there’s pickup touch rugby Tuesday at 5:30 at Hood River’s waterfront park, there’s pickup Ultimate Frisbee at 5:30 at the Hood River Marina Wednesday, there’s the women’s mountain bike ride, the Post and Pinot at 5:30 Wednesday, leaving Dirty Fingers, there’s the Post and Pint on Thursday at 5:30.

On to the weather forecast… road bikers are going to be quite happy the next three days, and mountain bikers will have great dirt too. Today looks sunny, with temps in the upper 30’s early and low 60’s later, with no wind this morning, picking up to E 23-36 at Stevenson/Rooster with 5-15 elsewhere this afternoon.

Tomorrow brings a chance of frost in the Gorge, so protect your tender plants. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early (or lower) and the mid 60’s later. Wind will be E 5-10 early and W 10-15 after 2pm. It’ll be sunny, with a chance of a few high clouds.

Wednesday looks sunny. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and low 70’s late, so break out your tanning equipment. Wind will be E 23-26 at Stevenson/Rooster and E 5-15 in the afternoon everywhere else. Thursday brings nuking west wind to the Central Gorge.

On Mt. Hood, today’s going to suck, as 1” of new snow overnight turns sticky by mid-morning. By Wednesday, though, we should have perfect corn snow. Back to today… the free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1500′ early and 4000′ late, with NE wind at 25-35 early and E wind at 20-30 this afternoon.

Tuesday looks sunny on Mt. Hood. The FAF will be 5500′ all day with N wind at 15-25 early and 20-30 midday. Wednesday looks sunny. The FAF will be 5500′ early and 9000′ in the afternoon with light and variable wind. Thursday looks sunny, with the FAF at 8000′ and strong NW wind building to 35-45 in the afternoon.

Have an awesome day today!

4/21 Mt. Hood sun, Gorge wind, sick road biking, and a bunch of events.

Good morning,

We have an emergency notice this morning: The HRATS weren’t quite able to finish 8-Track yesterday, despite 30 folks swinging tools. So, there’s another work party today. 9am. Family Man. Be there. Let’s get this thing done and get off that nasty old road (although there’s a beautiful view from that nasty old road…)

Next, there’s a swap meet at Windance this morning. Since I can’t be there, that means you have to put up with a list of my stuff for sale at some point this week. =)

Also today, the Cherry of a Ride, benefiting St. Mary’s in The Dalles (sounds windy), and the Ram’s Head Randonee (marketed as the ‘Rams Head Randonee’ – not sure whose head is being rammed) at Meadows. There’s pickup touch Rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm too.

In weather news, the west wind continues, once again, on the weekend, when you weekend warriors can get it and us weekend workers have to sit in the office sighing while looking at iWindsurf. With low clouds over the western Gorge today, we’ll see 15-18 here, but as a trough moves in this afternoon, westerlies pick up to 26-30, first at Stevenson (clouds be damned) and then from Lyle eastward to Arlington. Expect it to be gusty. Temps today will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 50’s later.

Tomorrow sees an abrupt shift to east wind under clear sky. Expect a quick build to 23-26 at Stevenson and Rooster, with 5-15 through the rest of the Gorge. Woot, woot. It’s totally going to be a day to head east on a long road ride early and come back with a tailwind midday. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 60’s late.

On Tuesday, we start with east wind at 23-26, becoming very light west wind late in the day. Sunny sky. Temps low 40’s early and upper 60’s late.

Mt. Hood sees partly sky this morning with high clouds later and maybe just maybe a few sprinkles. The freezing level (FAF) will be around 6500′ (dumb models say 4000 or less, but it’s already well above that). Wind will be NW 25 early, becoming W 20 mid-afternoon.

Tomorrow looks clear, with the FAF at 2000′ early and 4000’+ later with NE wind at 15mph. Tuesday sees the FAF at 6000′ with NE wind at 15 early, becoming NW at 20 by midday. Wednesday looks clear, with the FAF at 5000′ early and 10,000′ later with E wind at 5-15.

Have an awesome day today!
