Random Morning Thoughts

Gratitude Month, day 9: Today I am grateful to the mountain bike community for making me feel loved and supported through their choice of me as HRATS secretary. Thanks, people. You have no idea how much that meant to me.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′
Saturday
Sunday
Monday

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Not in the near future… Today sees the free air freezing level (FAF) at 4000′ early, rising to 8000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be light this morning, picking up to SW 15 by midday. A few sprinkles are possible this afternoon. Tomorrow sees the FAF at 9000′ early, rising to 10,000′ in the afternoon with SW wind at 20-25 all day. On Monday, the FAF starts at 10,000′ and rises to 12,000′, with SW wind at 15 early, swinging to S at 10-20 later on. Looks like the freezing level will stay above the ski resort bases through Tuesday.

Plain Old Local Weather

Looks like we’ll see clouds with a few scattered sunbreaks for the next few days. There’s a slight chance of some sprinkles late today, but other than that, we should stay dry and relatively mild through Tuesday morning.

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s no west wind in our near future, but there are some easterlies for those so inclined. We’ll see a slow increase to E 15-18 today. Tomorrow sees a little disagreement in the models, but I expect we’ll get 20-23 at Stevenson and 24-28 at Rooster Rock. Easterlies ramp way up on Monday for 25-29 at Stevenson and 30-35 at Rooster Rock.

Road and Mountain Biking

The pavement was dry yesterday evening, and that means it’s probably dry today. I rode in Odell around 2pm yesterday, and the light was amazing. With the sun so low, magic hour becomes hours long. Golden light shining on golden leaves across the whole valley… so beautiful. Even if you’re not a road biker, it’s worth taking a lap on the road today.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

Join the HRATS (and me) this morning for a work party at Columbia Hills State Park. Sure, it’s a drive, but it’ll be worth it. Help us today, and you’ll be among the first to ride this new trail. And… you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you helped open it! Meet at 10 Speed at 8:30am or at Crawford Oaks trailhead (MP 88ish Highway 14) around 9:30.

Also today, it’s the HRVHS ski swap from 9-3, unless you buy early bird tickets for $25, in which case it starts earlier. Going on all day today, you can see great films at the Mt. Hood Independent Film Festival at Columbia Center for the Arts. Coming up tomorrow, Portland moto club LOBOS has a poker run ride thing in Post Canyon. And also tomorrow, the Seahawks play at 10am.

Have an awesome day today!

Gratitude Month continues. What and whom are you grateful for today? I’m grateful to have a life that allows me to take advantage of a rain-free window today to ride my bike.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′
TGIF
Saturday
Sunday

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Yesterday’s big storm delivered on the very low end of the snow predictions: just 3” fell at 5300′. Better than nothing, I suppose, but not enough for me to make the drive to skin for turns. Today sees the snow level around 4000′, with light flurries for up to .1” water value (WV), or just a trace of new snow. Wind will be W 20-25 early, fading to W 5 in the afternoon.

Saturday brings a warming trend: the freezing level starts at 5000′, rising to 7000′ by 1pm and 8000′ by 7pm. Luckily, there won’t be a ton of moisture with this system: just .1” WV, so just some light rain on top of the snowpack. Wind will be SW 15 early, rising to SW 25-30 in the afternoon.

Sunday looks dry, cloudy, and warm on Mt. Hood, with the freezing level at 10,000′. Wind will be SW 20-30. Next chance of significant snowfall? Models aren’t showing anything yet…

Plain Old Local Weather

The weather will remain cloudy, but at least it will be less wet than it’s been for the last 48 hours. We’ll see a dry morning with a chance of light sprinkles this afternoon. Tomorrow starts off dry, with sprinkles possible after noon. Sunday looks dry.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We’re starting off with decent cross-Cascade gradient this morning – .05(pdx-dls) and .08(dls-psc) – and that should give us some wind this morning. Expect 10-13 in the western Gorge and 22-25 out east by midday. I’m not sure it’s worth the drive, though, as models show the gradients diminishing by afternoon, for light-to-no wind after 2pm or so. Tomorrow brings easterlies at 15-18 and Sunday brings another round of fairly light east wind. As of right now, Monday looks like a big east wind day.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went jogging on Seven Streams yesterday, and saw tons of damage caused by people riding bikes on muddy trails. Remember, folks, our trails are maintained by volunteer time and volunteer donations. When you ride on muddy trails, you disrespect these hard-working volunteers and force them to spend time repairing rather than building. Spread the word!

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

I need you tomorrow for half the day. HRATS (me, in this case) is taking a crew to Columbia Hills State Park to put the finishing touches on a year-round-use 6.5 mile trail. I need about 12-20 folks. Please RSVP here so I can track how many people can help. Bring a bike, gloves, helmet, and eye protection. Thanks to Windance, New York City Subs, and Henni’s Restaurant for supporting this work party!

Tonight is the Warren Miller ski movie at the Skylight Theater, benefiting HRVMS. Both showings are all ages, and there’s a Meadows pass plus lots of other stuff in the raffle. Meadows will be there taking pass photos. Tonight is also dropoff time at the HRVHS ski swap: 6:30-8pm. The swap is Saturday.

Today through Sunday is the Mt. Hood Independent Film Festival. Day passes are $15 and a full festival pass is $35.

On Saturday, the Lobos Motorcycle Club out of Portland has a Poker Run on the motorized trails of Post Canyon.

Have an awesome day today!
