Judging by the number of people on the water yesterday (according to Erin, anyway), windsurfing and kiteboarding season is really winding down. However, with the gradients at .12 and .06 this morning, we’ll see another round of west wind today. The morning brings 24-28 from Rowena eastward, but that wind is probably going to fade by midday, getting gusty and holding in the 20-24 range through sundown. At this point, it looks like a Doug’s day, with a break in the clouds right over Doug’s, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see another Wall day today.

Tomorrow and Sunday both look like light wind days, but at least Saturday’s going to be partly sunny. Sunday looks pretty grey and rainy. I guess that means that the fishing is going to be good both days this weekend. If you catch any, feel free to drop them off at my house.

It’s the first Friday in October tonight, and that means it’s First Friday in Hood River. Come to town and check out local art, local wine, and local music. Also this evening is the Friday night pickup rugby game at the Hood River Marina at 6pm. If you’d rather check out the art and socialize, there’s another rugby game in Mosier at 4pm on Sunday. If you’re feeling politically feisty, consider showing up at First Friday with your 99% or your Tea Party signs (now don’t say I’m not equal opportunity). Hey, 800 other cities and towns are doing it (including Seaside, Oregon, of all places), so we here in Hood River need to get in on the fun too!

Moving on… on Sunday, you can head to Portland and occupy the 26.2 miles on the Portland Marathon route. Or if you’re still working on your marathon training program, the Columbia Gorge marathon is October 23rd.

Finally, if you haven’t headed up to Northwestern Lake to check out the spawning salmon, it’s 100 percent worth it. That’s the first time fish have spawned there in 100 years. And remember, the dam comes out on October 26th.

Have an awesome day today!

Somehow I missed that yesterday was national bike to school and bike to work day, so congratulations to everyone out there who took part in that event. If you liked riding your bike, keep at it, because this week and next are the annual Eco-challenge. You can take on any sort of earth-friendly mission for these two weeks. Check out ecochallenge.org for more information, and join team Hood River while you’re there.

In wind news, there’s high pressure building off the coast today, and that’s going to make the west wind blow. We’ll see a quick build to 25-28 from Mosier (or maybe Rowena) east to Arlington today, with the strongest, steadiest wind from Rowena to Rufus. I can’t guarantee the direction will be good on the Maryhill stretch of the river, but I think it’s a pretty good bet.

Tomorrow starts off windy too, with 23-26 in the morning from Hood River eastward. Or maybe from the cloud line eastward. =) As a system nears the coast in the afternoon, the wind will back off to the 17-20 range, with the strongest wind in the afternoon at Stevenson and Arlington.

Saturday looks like a pretty nice day, with partly sunny skies and light wind, and then on Sunday, we’ll see a return to rainy weather.

Coming up on Friday, it’s First Friday in Hood River, and also on Friday, if you want something more energetic, it’s touch rugby, free for everyone, no experience required, at 6pm at the Hood River Marina.

For you dirt bikers and quad riders, the regulated use closure on Hood River County lands has been lifted. That means that you and your offroad vehicle are welcome back on all trails in the county.

Have an awesome day today!
