Now that the kids are back in school, the nights are cooling off, and the tourists are starting to leave the Gorge, it’s time to think skiing and snowboarding. Meadows passes are now on sale for the you-don’t-need-three-friends price of $499. Included in that price is the new Stadium Express lift (use your imagination and giggle when you realize the only possible abbreviation for that lift), eliminating the need for you to use the cattle crossing to Star (snowboarders, cheer loudly). The new lift gets you over to Star, HRM and Heather (it tops out at the same spot as Heather) without waiting in the MHX line. At this point, we’re looking at a weak La Nina or a neutral year, meaning average (450”) or better (max=830”) snowfall. I’ll do the statistical analysis and get back to you. Buy your season pass now!

Remember how I said I was going to hide a Henni’s gift certificate up on Lake Branch road for you road bikers. Well, scrap that idea, because Lost Lake and Wahtum Campgrounds are closed due to the fire, as are the 16 (Red Hill/Vista Ridge), 18 (Lolo Pass) and 13 (Lost Lake) roads. The closure information said nothing about Lake Branch Road, but I think it’s safe to assume it’s not rideable right now.

The wind forecast for the next week looks dismal. The gradient this morning is .06 westerly, and that will be enough to support west wind in the 10-13 range. Models show the wind dying out pretty early. Usually they are wrong when we start off with a west gradient, but given the forecast for heat in Portland, they’re probably right today.
Tomorrow and Thursday bring light east wind possibly hitting the 15-18 range early both mornings. After that, there’s not much hope for wind until next Monday, when long range (and therefore almost completely inaccurate) models predict a gradual cooldown.
In fun activities, the Thirsty Woman alternative ride is tonight instead of yesterday, as the TW was closed due to Labor Day (Temira’s forecast was also closed yesterday due to Labor Day). Tonight is also Tuesday Night Tri. Tomorrow is Post and Pinot, the Kayak Shed’s shop paddle, and sailboat racing.
