Temira’s random morning thoughts

It’s yet another lovely morning in the Gorge. Today, think some happy thoughts for all of your friends and mine who are currently broken and unable to play as hard as they’d like. Kathy, JJ, Gnarla, Nick and Tyler (I hope I didn’t forget anyone), this one’s for you. Jeff, you’re out, because I saw you mountain biking. We feel for you guys: being hurt sucks. And all of us want you to heal up fast and heal up fully. And for all you healthy people, appreciate being healthy. Appreciate the f**k out of it, because you never know when you could join the group on the sidelines.

Wind forecast

It’s amazing how much the forecast models can change from one day to the next. When I looked last night, today basically looked like a no-wind day. Now it’s going to be windy. Why? With a .11 gradient (pdx-dls) to start and clouds in Portland, we have a good Gorge setup. (btw, I looked at the webcam at PDX – I didn’t drive there to check. I’m environmentally conscious that way). 15-18 from Hood River to The Dalles early becomes 17-21 this morning, picking up to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles this afternoon.

Tomorrow looks like a carbon copy of today. That was easy. Too easy. Something must be wrong.

On Sunday, a weak weather system brushes the Gorge. Timing will make a big difference, but at this point, it looks like we’ll see stronger west wind, likely in the mid to upper twenties, centered near Hood River.

Out on the coast (dang it, I forgot to put this in the email this morning), expect 30+ at Pistol for the next few days. Expect 20-25 everywhere else with NW 4@7 today, 5@7 tomorrow and 5@7 Sunday.

Tomorrow in Cascade Locks, the NWTA folks have a campout at the EasyCLIMB trail. Bring your kids and their bikes for some riding and outdoor movies on the big screen. If you want to do some trail work, the boys will be out earlier in the day making an already rad trail radder.

Very Important News

If you’re interested in some paddling today, the folks doing the Gorge Outrigger Race this weekend have a social paddle from Stevenson to Home Valley today. Meet in Stevenson at 1pm to do the paddle. No, I do not know exactly where in Stevenson, but it’s a small place. Meet at the place with the people with the SurfSkis, SUPs and outrigger canoes. Then this weekend, there are surfski, SUP and outrigger races both days. Check out NWOutrigger.com for more information.

Today in Cascade Locks, it’s the Gorge Skiff Invitational race, and then it’s the WIND youth sailing regatta all this weekend.

In Trout Lake Saturday, it’s the Wild Woman Marathon. If you want to run 26 miles off-road with a bunch of cool gals, and then camp out for the night, join this event. Finally, if you’re headed out of town toward Bend this weekend, make sure to cheer on the racers in the Cascade Cycling Classic.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira’s random morning thoughts

I thought you guys should know that I ran out of half-n-half this morning. I know. This is like crying over spilled milk, but it’s hard to spill the milk when you’re out. And it’s really hard to enjoy a nice cold cup of two-day-old French Press when there’s no cream to mask the bitter taste. Ah, first-world problems. Speaking of first-world problems, yesterday was the first day in a long time that I had to stop windsurfing because I was tired, not because the wind died. Now, that’s a nice problem to have!

Wind forecast

We’ll see west wind at 15-18 from Hood River to The Dalles this morning, with a period of 19-23 mid-morning, but it’s not going to last all day. Although Portland has some clouds this morning, they’re shallow clouds, and they’re forecast to burn off quickly. That will leave us with a solid midday lull (yeah, like yesterday’s, which never happened, thankfully). And then we’ll see a late evening bump back to 15-18 at Stevenson and Hood River.

Models are going back-and-forth over wind for Friday and Saturday. At this point, it looks like we’ll see early morning 15-18 west wind tomorrow, fading quickly as Portland and the desert both bake in the sun. If you’d like to get in some stretching before you play tomorrow, Molly K has her by-donation watersports warmup class at Cascade Kiteboarding at 8:15am.

Saturday starts with 15-18 in the morning, picking up to 21-24 – probably at Stevenson – late in the day as a weak weather system approaches BC. At this point – and this is way too far out to get excited – models are showing strong west wind on Sunday. I’m excited. You shouldn’t be, because the forecast will likely change. Honestly, I’m not sure why I’m mentioning this, because I’ll only break your heart if the BIG DAY doesn’t materialize…

Bike News

Tonight is the night I crush myself by attempting to keep up with men at the Post n’ Pint. If your name is Jennifer, Suzy, Dee, Kay, Amanda, JJ or Ann, you too have the ability to keep up with the men (in some cases, you crush the men) and you should come keep me company while I suffer to earn a beer that I don’t even drink. If you are anyone else, show up and push yourself for 1.5 hours of Post Canyon MTB, and you’ll be rewarded with a free beer after. This is like getting paid to work out. Why wouldn’t you?

Well, maybe because you’re watching the Tour de France? Today is the Alp d’Huez climb… twice. Watch the race on the TV at Dirty Fingers at 5:30pm and 7:30pm. If you happen to be in Bend, you get to cheer on the roadies at home, because it’s the Cascade Cycling Classic!

Very Important News

In water news tonight, it’s the Bump n’ Glide downwind paddle – meet at Nichols Boat Basin at 5pm with your SUP or kayak to set shuttle.

If you were out on the river yesterday and you saw some small boats racing downwind (it looked like fun!) you were seeing skippers preparing for the outrigger canoe, SUP and surfski races in Stevenson this weekend. Visit nwoutrigger.com for more information on that event.

In Cascade Locks tomorrow, it’s the Gorge Skiff Invitational sailing race, and then this weekend, it’s the WIND youth sailing regatta. Also in Cascade Locks on Saturday, there’s a family mountain bike campout starting at 6pm at the EasyCLIMB trail, and the guys of NWTA will be bringing a big outdoor movie screen to show some films. They’ll also be doing trail work during the day, if you’d like to help improve this already fun year-round riding loop.

Have an awesome day today!
