Wind forecast
It’s a very cloudy start to the day, but it’s not the kind of clouds we look for when predicting strong wind. We’re seeing mid-level convective debris this morning – thunderstorm precursors, if you will. Not a great sign for steady wind, but a good sign that maybe, just maybe, we’ll see some rain this weekend – best chances for rain start tonight, and continue through Sunday. Hip-hip-hooray!
That said, we have .09 (pdx-dls) this morning, enough for an upper-teen start at the Hatchery. We’ll see gusty/up-and-down westerlies today, strongest near Hood River this morning, at 22-25. Stevenson will fill in late morning in the upper teens, and by afternoon, we’ll see 22-25 all the way from Stevenson to The Dalles.
Forecasting becomes more difficult the next two days as atmospheric instability increases due to an offshore low (you can also expect lots of clouds and relatively muggy weather). It will be windy, but the details are tough to predict. That said, let’s call it 19-23 for much of the day Saturday, possibly picking up dramatically late in the day. Sunday looks very similar to Saturday. However, with increasing thunderstorms, and increasing chances for rain, the wind will likely be unreliable for periods.

Other News
In sports news this weekend, the Tasar World Championships kick off in Cascade Locks on Saturday. We have sailors from all over the world here for this event – lots of Aussies… lots and lots of Aussies. Bring Fosters – so swing by and check it out. For the local racers, Saturday’s the Double Damned race from Cascade Locks to The Dalles – it’s the most chaotic sailboat race of the year, so wherever you are on the river, keep an eye out for the big boats on Saturday and yield the right of way (oh wait, it’s not like you were going to challenge a 40′ boat for the right of way)
Also on Saturday, it’s the annual King of the Hook windsurfing competition – it’s old-school longboard freestyle. Come by and watch, if nothing else! Hook. 5-8pm.
In other news, the Larch Mountain Time Trail bike race happens on Saturday in Corbett, there’s pickup rugby in Mosier on Sunday afternoon, and there’s’ pickup ultimate Frisbee in Hood River on Sunday afternoon, and finally, the Perseid Meteor Shower kicks off Sunday!
