Red skies at night, sailor’s delight. Red skies in morning, sailor take warning. What if the sky is red both in the morning and in the evening?

Wind forecast

It’s a very cloudy start to the day, but it’s not the kind of clouds we look for when predicting strong wind. We’re seeing mid-level convective debris this morning – thunderstorm precursors, if you will. Not a great sign for steady wind, but a good sign that maybe, just maybe, we’ll see some rain this weekend – best chances for rain start tonight, and continue through Sunday. Hip-hip-hooray!

That said, we have .09 (pdx-dls) this morning, enough for an upper-teen start at the Hatchery. We’ll see gusty/up-and-down westerlies today, strongest near Hood River this morning, at 22-25. Stevenson will fill in late morning in the upper teens, and by afternoon, we’ll see 22-25 all the way from Stevenson to The Dalles.

Forecasting becomes more difficult the next two days as atmospheric instability increases due to an offshore low (you can also expect lots of clouds and relatively muggy weather). It will be windy, but the details are tough to predict. That said, let’s call it 19-23 for much of the day Saturday, possibly picking up dramatically late in the day. Sunday looks very similar to Saturday. However, with increasing thunderstorms, and increasing chances for rain, the wind will likely be unreliable for periods.

If you need a new window in one of your sails, you can get one at Northwave for 15% off through August by mentioning you read about it here.

In sports news this weekend, the Tasar World Championships kick off in Cascade Locks on Saturday. We have sailors from all over the world here for this event – lots of Aussies… lots and lots of Aussies. Bring Fosters – so swing by and check it out. For the local racers, Saturday’s the Double Damned race from Cascade Locks to The Dalles – it’s the most chaotic sailboat race of the year, so wherever you are on the river, keep an eye out for the big boats on Saturday and yield the right of way (oh wait, it’s not like you were going to challenge a 40′ boat for the right of way)

Also on Saturday, it’s the annual King of the Hook windsurfing competition – it’s old-school longboard freestyle. Come by and watch, if nothing else! Hook. 5-8pm.

In other news, the Larch Mountain Time Trail bike race happens on Saturday in Corbett, there’s pickup rugby in Mosier on Sunday afternoon, and there’s’ pickup ultimate Frisbee in Hood River on Sunday afternoon, and finally, the Perseid Meteor Shower kicks off Sunday!

Have an awesome day today!

Yesterday’s forecast was for hot, muggy weather, so I went for a 7am bike ride. Before 7:45am, I saw five people I knew. This amused me. You people are all as crazy for cycling as I am. Or maybe you’re all just as crazy as I am. Also yesterday, I learned about something more awesome than $3 Ruins Tuesday: $12 prime rib. At the Ruins, you get only entrance (and safety) for your $3. At Cebu, you get delicious prime rib for your $12. $12 > $3, but prime rib > entrance.

Wind forecast

That late burst of strong wind that both iWind and I were hoping for yesterday didn’t happen until the wee hours of last night, and it’s still happening as I write this forecast. With .14 gradient across the Cascades and plenty of marine clouds in Portland, we’re off to a very windy, unpredicted start to the day. Which means I screwed up my own schedule and am typing as fast as I can!

Call it 27-31 this morning at the Hatchery (cuz that’s what it’s doing), fading to 24-27 by midday from the Hatch to Mosier. Expect mid-twenties at Stevenson and Doug’s this afternoon with low twenties at Maryhill and maybe even Arlington late in the afternoon.

Things get tricky the next couple of days as atmospheric instability increases (that means thunderstorms are likely) and weak little weather systems swing through (increasing the instability, gradients, and likelihood of gusty, up-and-down wind). That said, Friday starts with 23-26ish through the whole Gorge, fading in the eastern Gorge but holding all day in the western Gorge.

If the timing is right, we may see strong westerlies on Saturday morning, fading to 24-27. Sunday also brings west wind that’s strong enough for wind sports.

So yeah. Sorry for the lack of details and specifics. It’ll be windy for the next three days. It’s just hard to predict exactly how much/when/where with the thunderstorm potential and a series of shortwaves moving through.

If you need a new window in one of your sails, you can get one at Northwave for 15% off through August by mentioning you read about it here.

Keep your camera handy around sunrise and sunset this weekend, because the atmospheric instability will make for pretty sunrises and sunsets.

If you want to ride bikes tonight, it’s the Post n’ Pint with the boys at Dirty Fingers – two hours of riding in Post Canyon followed by food and beer at the shop. If you ride, you get a free beer – it’s like getting paid to exercise, so give it a shot. For me, free beer is like torture. I do not like the stuff, so when I do this ride, it’s double torture.

Coming up this weekend, it’s the Double-Damned sailboat race from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. Once those big boats are out of Cascade Locks on Saturday, it’s time for day one of the Tasar World Championships. If you have any interest in sailboat racing, make sure to swing by Cascade Locks during the next week, because we have sailors from all over the world here for this one.

Have an awesome day today!
