Tuesday. 8/13. Gorge wind, events, and important meetings.

This is Temira.
This is Temira!

Thank you all for your donations and kind words during last month’s pledge drive. Whew. Glad that’s over. I always feel a little weird asking for donations. That said, should you like to get on the daily email list (where you can occasionally win cool stuff), please take the time to click on the sun below and make a donation of $12 or more. That gets you a year’s subscription, and it makes me smile, because I know then that the hard work I put into this is worth a lot to you. Thank you for reading my work, and thank you for donating. Have a wonderful day!

Wind forecast guess paragraphs

More sunshine and lighter wind are on the schedule for the Gorge today. Expect fading west wind as the day goes on – as of 5:30am, it was 21 at the Hatchery. Most likely, that won’t increase, as we have only .08 gradient and zero clouds in Portland. Let’s call it up-and-down 18-22 today, likely fading to 15-18 after noon near Hood River, when the wind will pick up to 17-20 at Cascade Locks.

Tomorrow starts off light and glassy, perfect for fishing or SUP or rowing. As a new, fiesty upper level low and associated front approach the coast late morning, the wind will quickly pick up to 15-18, and then increase further to 22-25, strongest and steadiest at Stevenson, and likely windier in Hood River than at the Hatchery. It will even fill in all the way to Arlington late in the afternoon, but probably will only be 15-18 that far east.

Thursday looks like 10-15 early and 20-23 in the afternoon, but that, of course, is a long ways out to be forecasting when multiple low pressure systems are lined up in the Pacific.

Don’t forget that windsurf sail windows are on sail at Northwave for 15% off through this month. Just mention you read about it here! And don’t forget to check out your windsurfing and kiting and SUP and sailboat racing photos at Grant Myrdal’s website.

Non-sports, but still important, news

First, tonight is $12 prime rib night at Cebu from 5-9pm. Yeah, sure, you could pay $3 to be safe at the outdoor party at the Ruins at Springhouse, but you could also eat a huge and delicious piece of prime rib (and fries) for $12 at Cebu.

Second, there are two important meetings this week. Unfortunately, they are both happening on the same night: Thursday. From 5-7pm, Oregon State Parks has a meeting at the west end of the Twin Tunnels Trail to discuss plans for recreation in the Gorge.

At 6pm Thursday, Cover Oregon has a meeting at the Hood River Inn to educate you about your options once the health care exchange goes live. You can learn the truth, and nothing but the truth, about how the Affodable Care Act (aka “Obamacare”) will affect you. To register (it’s a free meeting), go here. Why am I mentioning this in a recreation report? Because too many of you (including many of my friends) go without insurance because you can’t afford it. If you’re a single person making under 45k, the ACA will give you subsidies. Go to the talk and learn about it.

Sports news

In Cascade Locks today, the Tasar World Championships continue. On the opposite side of the river, starting tomorrow, it’s the Skamania County Fair, and on Saturday, it’s the Skamania County Fair 5k running/walking race.

On the water this weekend, it’s the Naish Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge at Hood River’s Waterfront Park. We’ll have standup paddle racers from all over the world here for this race, so swing by. In addition to the racing, there are free standup paddle lessons, free standup paddle demos, and food and music.

Finally, mark your calendar for next Saturday, the 24th, when the Bigfoot Bash and Bounty takes over Home Valley Park with all things Sasquatch.

Have an awesome day today!

Wind forecast guess paragraphs

We have a warmer, sunnier day on tap today, with convection ending, meaning it might be less muggy too, but the west wind continues. With a morning gradient of .05 and plenty of clouds on the PDX webcam, we’ll see a build to mid-morning teens (which is better than early morning teens, which have a tendency to be grumpy and unpredictable). As desert heating continues while Portland struggles with marine clouds, the wind will build to 20-23 near Hood River midday, filling in at Stevenson and Doug’s this afternoon.

High pressure inland tomorrow isn’t going to get much help from a weak marine push and weak high pressure off the California coast. We’ll see west wind at 15-18 bright-n-early, fading to very light wind by mid-morning. How light? Hard to tell if we’ll keep 5-10 or if the river will go glassy. Sorry, my Tasar friends, but below 10mph things get tricky.

On Wednesday, a big low pressure system arrives at the Oregon Coast, or at least the offshore waters. This should give us SW flow and decent clouds in Portland. The thermal gradient will save us: west wind at 5-10 in the morning should rise to the low twenties near Stevenson in the afternoon with upper teens from Hood River to The Dalles.

It currently looks like stronger west wind will return for Thursday and Friday, but you know how those long-range forecasts can be. That’ll be just in time for Grant Myrdal to get out there with his team to take photos of you windsurfing and kiting and racing boats. View the summer action photos here.

Other News

The Tasar World Championships continue in Cascade Locks today, with world-class sailboat racing in our backyard. Should you want to meet these folks, they’ll be hanging around the marine tonight after 5pm. Just look for the Solstice mobile pizza cart. You can use those tokens from supporting the Solstice Kickstarter campaign. You did get in on that, didn’t you?

It’s mellow bike ride night in the Gorge. The Ride Around the Gorge folks are meeting at Volcanic Bottle Shop in Hood River at 5:30 for a mellow ride around Hood River, although last week they ended up doing intervals, so it may not be so mellow after all. My legs feel like someone stole all the giddy-up from them, so I’m not sure I’m going to make it.

For a truly mellow ride, join the Mountain View Cycles crew for a cruise to Mosier and Back, with a long stop at the Thirsty Woman for food and drinks. Join that ride by meeting at Mountain View at 6:30. In bike news tomorrow, join Mike and Kim and maybe me for road bike death intervals, meeting at the west end of the Twin Tunnel trails at 6:30 in the morning. Wait. It was well after 6:30am as I wrote this, so it seems unlikely I will make death intervals at 6:30am.

Coming up next weekend, it’s the Naish Gorge Paddle Challenge. Mark your calendar for races and free demos, along with music and free standup paddle lessons. Did I mention there are free SUP demos? This is your chance to try SUP if you haven’t already! And it’s also your chance to look at super-ripped, tan folks from all over the world. Hey, don’t fault me for looking. I’m only human.

Have an awesome day today!
