9/3. Local’s Day. Wind, events, and Prime Rib. Yummy.

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – nobody but you pays me to do this. So why is it here? This forecast started as a way for me to find better wind in the summer and better snow in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you too (almost) every day. Donate to keep it going! Make a $12 or larger donation by clicking on the sun and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Random Morning Thoughts
It’s the day after Labor Day in the Gorge, and that means it’s Local’s Day. Sorry visitors, but this one is for the year-round residents! Woot woot! No more traffic jams. More space on the water. Less stopping for people who don’t know where the stop signs are downtown. Our town emerges from tourist season today, looks around, and if it sees whitecaps on the river, it crawls back into tourist season for another six weeks. Looks like tourist season will last through October this year…

Wind forecast

But just because tourist season is dying down doesn’t mean the wind will die down. Despite the offshore low still hanging off the coast, we have a .08 gradient this morning. The overall not-so-great weather setup implies gusty, up-and-down wind, but we’ll still see 21-24 today near Hood River, filling in from Steven’s Locks to Maryhill (probably not the right direction for the Wall) this afternoon, with upper teens further east.

The upper level low moves closer tomorrow, giving us light wind early and gusty 15-18 after 2pm.

Thursday sees the upper low move onshore, giving us very strong west wind. However, that strong wind will be mixed in with rain and thunderstorms, and it will be relatively gusty and short-lived. So just throw your gear in the car and be ready for the wind when it happens – probably somewhere east of Hood River, but maybe here in town for a short period.

Other Gorge News

For fun tonight, the Triathlon Club has their weekly practice of a 500 yard swim, 7 mile ride, and 2 mile run. They had moved the practice to Mayer Park for tourist season, but now that it’s Local’s Day, they may move it back to the Event Site. Check their FB page for info. There’s also pickup rugby tonight at 5:30 at the Hood River Marina.

Tonight in the ain’t-gonna-burn-no-calories-unless-you’re-twerkin’, there’s Ruin’s Tuesday at Springhouse, where $3 keeps you safe (from a big fine by the Fire Marshal, I guess?), and there’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu from 5-9pm (does not include a visit to your cardiologist).

Tomorrow’s the big sports night, with rugby, pickup Ultimate Frisbee, free Yoga, women’s mountain biking, and sailboat races. Family mountain biking is done for the season, but if you want to have your own Families at Family Man, feel free.

Looking ahead to the weekend, it’s Pacific Crest Trail Days in Cascade Locks, the Oregon Enduro mountain bike race at Sandy Ridge, the Fly-In at WAAM, and the Rural Rampage family bike race in Hood River, with proceeds benefiting programs in the Hood River School District. Call Hood River Community Ed at (541) 386-2055 for more information on the Rural Rampage.

Have an awesome day today!

This is Temira!

Thank you all for your donations and kind words during last month’s pledge drive. Whew. Glad that’s over. I always feel a little weird asking for donations. That said, should you like to get on the daily email list (where you can occasionally win cool stuff), please take the time to click on the sun below and make a donation of $12 or more. That gets you a year’s subscription, and it makes me smile, because I know then that the hard work I put into this is worth a lot to you. Thank you for reading my work, and thank you for donating. Have a wonderful day!

Wind forecast guess paragraphs

In wind news today, we’re still in that offshore low weather pattern, but at least we have a solid marine push and W .08 gradient today. Of course, when I wrote the forecast, it was pitch black outside, so it was hard to tell how dense the clouds were, but I know they are there, somewhere. Anyway, that should be enough for 21-24 for much of the day near Hood River, filling in to Doug’s/Lyle/Steven’s Locks in the afternoon.

Tomorrow starts with west 17-21 near Hood River, holding all day and filling in as far east as Maryhill, maybe even Arlington, late in the day as a weather system approaches the coast. Then on Tuesday, we’ll start with light west wind and then we’ll get 21-24 in the afternoon.

In Hood River today, it’s the last windsports swap meet of the season, happening at Luhr Jensen from 8am-noon. Once the swap meet is over, join CGWA and Northwave for an end of season BBQ, and if you’re coming to the BBQ, take the opportunity to join CGWA.

Also on the Hood River waterfront today, it’s the last race of the Gorge Cup windsurfing series, at the Event Site, starting around 8am. After the races, there’s another end of season BBQ.

Speaking of biking, today’s the Dirty Sellwood. If you’re in the Upper Valley this afternoon, keep your eye out for 40 or so riders headed for Dirty Fingers, and remember that bikes on the road have the same rights as cars on the road.

Have an awesome day today!
