Random Morning Thoughts
It’s going to be hot again today, with highs in the mid nineties. I believe that qualifies as “damned hot”, especially for September. Today’s record high, in case you were wondering, is 95. You can watch the Hood River Weather website to see if we break that record.
Wind forecast
You wind sports people can escape this blistering heat by heading to Stevenson or Rooster for east wind at 21-24 midday. The rest of the Gorge will see a slow build to E 5-10. Tomorrow brings light east wind all day, switching to light west late in the evening. Clouds start filtering into Portland on Friday morning, for west wind at 17-21. Saturday looks light, but if the models are correct about Sunday, it’ll be a west wind nuker. I have officially cleared my schedule.
The coast sees S 10-15 today with W 4’@13, light wind tomorrow with W 5@13, and N 10-15 Thursday afternoon with NW 3@10. It does not look like Jones Beach will be windy in the next few days, but it may be cooler than the Gorge.

Stuff happening tonight
It’s a busy night here in the Gorge, but these busy Wednesdays won’t last much longer as we start losing daylight. You can still go whitewater kayaking at 5:30 at Husum, ride bikes with the gals at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, and go sailboat racing at the Hood River Marina. There’s also Karma Yoga, free or by donation, at Flow at 4pm. The Caddyshack Classic is today – just a reminder for those unlucky enough to have been invited.
Stuff happening soon, but not tonight
Coming up this weekend, Ranger Jimmy T has a work party to finish the trail connecting Knebal Springs and Surveyor’s Ridge. Oh f**k yeah! This means that if you want to shuttle from High Prairie, you will have 25-30 miles of singletrack on your way to the Sawtooth Pub (where you should say hello to my good friend Derrick and his lovely lady Bri, if they are working). If you use the 44 Road trails, please mark your calendar and make plans to attend this work party. Meet at Dirty Fingers at 8:30 or Little John at 9. Bring a bike, boots, and a helmet of some sort. HRATS will have tools, although you could bring a garden rake if you have one.
Also this weekend, there’s the Double Cross cyclocross race in Hood River both days, there’s the Cascade to Crown Bike ride in Cascade Locks Sunday (10-62 miles) and there’s the Twin Tunnels 3k, 5k, and 10k running race, benefiting the Mosier School.
If that’s not enough, the Bridge of the Gods is closed to cars from 10-11 on Sunday so you, yes you, can walk across it courtesy of the Port of Cascade Locks. The Port of Hood River would never do anything so cool, would they? Uh huh. I didn’t think so. But remember, there are no toll-takers on Christmas, so you could attempt to walk/bike/drive-back-and-forth across the bridge all day December 25th. Now if only they’d do it for the 8 days of Chanukah too…
