Random Morning Thoughts
That’s a pretty bold move robbing a bank in a small town crawling with police. Nice police, especially officers Mason and Holste, but still, there are a lot of police around here. Glad nobody got hurt. Hope they catch that bastard soon.
Wind forecast
What a lovely start to the day: marine clouds in Portland, .13 gradient from Portland to The Dalles, and 20mph wind on the river already. Ah, it’s going to be a nice day in the Gorge. With this much gradient across the Cascades, you can expect the wind to pick up to 24-27 near Hood River this morning, backing off early afternoon as Portland heats up, and picking up to 21-24 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles this afternoon.
Tomorrow will be warmer, muggier, and less windy, as an offshore low messes with the Gorge gradient juju. Models are insisting on light east wind, as high pressure moves inland to accompany the offshore low. Honestly, I’d expect light west wind, but not enough wind for wind sports.
On Sunday, we start off with light west wind. The offshore low takes a ride eastward in the afternoon, giving us gusty, up-and-down 25-29 through the whole Gorge with rain and thunderstorms likely. Plan on hitting the water between noon and 5pm for the strongest wind.
Next week’s going to feel like autumn, with temps in the 70’s, periods of showers, and gusty westerlies, at least for the first half of the week.

Today’s a bit of a rest day in sports world, But tomorrow and Sunday are busy. For cyclists, the DoubleCross Cyclocross race is at Hood River High on Saturday and Sunday. The Cascade to Crown bike ride is Sunday in Cascade Locks. Ranger Jimmy T has a trail work party to complete the SuperConnector trail (linking Knebal and Surveyor’s) on Saturday (that’s tomorrow, duh). Meet at 8:30am at Dirty Finger or 9am at Little John. You won’t need tools, but you’ll need a helmet of some sort and shoes. And a bike.
There are also three pedestrian events this weekend: There’s a 5k/10k race in Cascade Locks tomorrow at 8am. There’s a 3k/5k/10k race benefiting the Mosier School at the west end of the Twin Tunnels Trail on Sunday at 8am. After Sunday’s race, head to Cascade Locks for your chance to walk across the Bridge of the Gods between 10am and 11am.
For your watershed giveback good deed of the year, head to Timberline on Sunday for a cleanup of the headwaters of the Salmon River. And for a celebration, head to McCord Bridge on the Historic Highway trail, for the grand opening celebration of the newest completed section at 11am Saturday.
