It’s fall now, and that means it’s time for … more windsurfing and kiting! No, silly. It’s time to think about skiing.

Random Morning Thoughts

The gradient is westerly, but the Nothing is moving from east to west. Go figure.

Cool local business – please support them!

There are some businesses that are just plain awesome. Dirt Hugger is one. Too much food waste at your business or municipality? Dirt Hugger will take it away! All that food waste becomes food-for-your-garden compost. Temira’s guerilla garden agrees: Dirt Hugger compost is the best! Pick it up or have it delivered. Call them today, and make your garden happy with a winter layer of compost: 541.9four6.347eight.

Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

Although models are predicting light east wind today, the gradient this morning stands at W .01. So, let’s call it glassy to light west today. Tomorrow, as a weak low slides along the western edge of Cascadia, expect east wind at 10-15.

Then on Sunday (big smile from the forecaster, who is supposed to be at the DF noon ride, but may have to settle for making cupcakes), you can expect strong west wind. Where exactly, I’m not sure yet, and I hesitate to put a speed down for fear of scaring it off, but it does look windy. If I had to guess right now, I’d say Hatch-Maryhill 26-30.

And if you like strong wind but don’t care about the direction, Monday is starting to look like the biggest east wind day so far this fall, and that’s saying something, because we’ve already seen some windy days at Rooster.

Plain old weather

With gradients across the Cascades non-existent this morning, the Nothing has had a chance to sneak in to the Gorge. It doesn’t look like a very strong Nothing, and Falcor and Atreyu will probably be able to beat it back before too much of the day has passed.

We’ll see another sunny day today, once the Nothing is gone. Tomorrow will likely bring more high clouds, and same goes for Sunday.

Biking

The trails are starting to get a bit dry, with sections of ball bearings. I have decided it’s okay if we get a day of rain now. In the meantime, there are still sections of delightful dirt, chanterelles are still scattered about the woods, and the fall colors are out. Don’t miss the leaves for the trail. And don’t miss the trees for the forest.

And remember, this is prime road biking season too: no wind. Yay!

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

Today I will attempt to get the events correct and not send out a correction email. Mt. Hood Meadows will be taking pass photos (and selling passes) this evening at the Hood River Inn. The website does not say where at the Hood River Inn, so I’m just going to assume Cebu, because they have a killer happy hour from 4pm-6pm. Pass photos happen from 4:30pm-9pm.

Tomorrow is the big HRATS work party in Post Canyon. All hikers/bikers/equestrians/moto folks are welcome; trails up for fixing include 8-Track, GP, Family Man, and the 130 moto/quad trail. Meet at Family Man at 8:30. Bring rakes, loppers, and any trailbuilding tools you may own.

In running world tomorrow, it’s costume central: Parkdale fun run/walk at 9am, Pumpkin Trail Run at North Bonneville at 9am, Harvest Hustle at Mid-Valley Elementary at 9:30am.

On Sunday, it’s the Columbia Gorge Marathon, so be aware of lots of people on the roads and on the Twin Tunnels trail. Sunday at noon, Dirty Fingers has a special “We hate cancer” Post n’ Pint lap at noon. Yes, you do get a free beer if you do the ride. After the ride, you can purchase grilled (chicken) breasts, breasts (in cupcake form), and special edition jerseys.

After that ride, there’s the Vampires and Victims 5k “race” at HRVHS. Half the runners are victims. Half are vampires. Two waves of runners. You figure out how this plays out. =)

Have an awesome day today!

Kayak Polo kept me out very late last night!

So after adjusting the Stevenson forecast based on hindcasting using the Stevenson meter, I was informed yesterday that the Stevenson sensor hasn’t been working all that well. Given that piece of information, I’m saying 25-29 today at Rooster and 22-25 at Stevenson, fading in the afternoon. We’ll see light east wind (less that 15mph) both Friday and Saturday.

Sunday, however, is shaping up to hold some westerly potential. High pressure off the coast combines with a cold, dry weather system dropping in on the east side for (oh please don’t let this spoil it) 26-30+ through the whole Gorge.

It’s lovely weather. Something different could happen Sunday.

Biking

Tonight at the Skylight Theatre, there’s a TGR ski movie. $10. 6pm all ages. 8pm 21 & over. Sammy Carlson will be there, and there’s a great raffle supporting the Hood River Valley Freestyle Ski Team. While you’re there, say hi to the nice folks from Mt. Hood Meadows and get your pass photo taken. Meadows will be at Double Mountain taking photos tonight too.

On Saturday, as I mentioned before, the HRATS have a big work party in Post Canyon. They’ll be doing repairs and improvements to Family Man, 8-Track, GP, and a new section of the 130 quad trail. Other folks, me included, will be in Portland at the AMS winter weather conference.

You runners, joggers, and walkers have three events on Saturday: The Parkdale fun run/walk (benefiting Parkdale PTO), the Harvest Hustle 5k/10 (Odell, benefiting Mid-Valley Elementary), and the Pumpkin Trail Run 5k in North Bonneville.

On Sunday, it’s the Columbia Gorge Marathon. Also Sunday, Dirty Fingers has an “I hate Cancer” ride at noon, doing the Post n’ Pint lap, followed by a Boobie BBQ (chicken breast and boobie cupcakes). All proceeds benefit, well, they’re going to benefit some local cancer organization.

Have an awesome day today!
