Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′
Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It was dry on Mt. Hood at 4:30 this morning, but by 5:40, a few snowflakes and sprinkles were falling from the sky. The weather models today favor the latter, rather than the former, as the snow level hovers around 7000′ before falling later today.

We’ll see the snow level at 7500′ early, dropping to 6500′ around 1pm, 6000′ around 4pm, and 3500′ this evening. The sky should clear by 7pm. We’ll see about 1” of water value (WV) fall today. Unfortunately, the majority will fall before the snow level drops this afternoon, so we’ll see somewhere in the neighborhood of .8” rain and .2” WV wet snow, for 1-2” at most at 5000′. Wind today will be W 35 early, rising to W 45 mid-morning and W 50 this afternoon before switching to WNW 40 overnight.

Tuesday looks clear. The free air freezing level (FAF) will start at 1500′ and rise to 9000′ in the afternoon, with temps in the low 30’s from 5000′-9000′. Wind will be NW 20 all day.

The inversion powers up on Wednesday, as temps at 5000′ rise into the low 40’s with the FAF at 8000′ early and 10,000′ in the afternoon with light and variable wind. Thursday looks sunny and very warm on Mt. Hood, with temps in the low 50’s. There is no precip in the extended forecast.

Plain Old Local Weather

It’s really hard to complain about 50 degree weather at the end of December. We’ll see a few sprinkles, and maybe some mid-morning rain, but we’ll see relatively warm temps today in the Gorge. If you want sunshine, head east of Hood River. Tuesday looks clear in the morning with inversion clouds likely building in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 40’s. Wednesday starts off near freezing with a gloomy inversion layer. Temps will likely just rise to the upper 30’s.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Today looks like a nice day for windsurfing and kiting. If you can handle the 40° water temp, you’ll have some nice strong wind this afternoon. Expect showery weather and gusty westerlies at 15-18 near Hood River this morning. Westerlies pick up to 26-30+ east of Mosier this afternoon. Maybe east of The Dalles.

Tomorrow brings leftover westerlies through the whole Gorge at 15-18 in the morning, dropping to 10-15 in the afternoon. On Christmas Day, expect east wind at 23-26. Easterlies should stick around through Friday.

Road and Mountain Biking

I have nothing to say about bicycling today.

Skiing on bubble ice is fun. That’s my opinion, anyway. It makes me laugh, therefore it’s fun.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Nice day yesterday.

Today will bring light orographic rain/snow/freezing rain showers in the morning, becoming clear and sunny by mid-morning with high clouds moving in this afternoon. The snow level will be 7000′ early, 8000′ mid-morning, and 9000′ in the afternoon. We’ll see .1-.3” water value (WV) before noon, and no precip after that. Wind will decrease during the day, starting at NW 30 and fading to NW 15 in the afternoon.

A strong cold front moves in Monday morning, with precip starting between 1am and 4am. The snow level will be initially high, 9000′. It will drop to 8000′ by 10am, 7000′ by 1pm, 5000′ around 4pm and 3000′ in the evening, before dropping to 2000′ Tuesday morning. We’ll see around 1” of WV between 4am and 4pm, most of which will fall before the snow level drops, giving us .75” rain and .2-.3” WV of colder precip, for 1-3” of new snow in the late afternoon. Wind on Monday will be W 20 early, W 40 at 10am, W 50 at 1pm, and WNW 45 in the evening.

Tuesday looks clear and cold in the morning, but building high pressure will bring warm, sunny weather to Mt. Hood in the afternoon. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1500′ early, rising to 6500′ mid-morning and 8000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be NW 20 early, dropping to NW 10-15 in the afternoon.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday look dry and warm.

Plain Old Local Weather

This morning looks partly cloudy with a chance of sprinkles in the Gorge, and the afternoon looks partly cloudy with temps nearing 50 degrees. Rain starts Monday morning, becoming showery in the afternoon. The high temp Monday will be around 50 degrees. Tuesday will be dry and may be clear, but may also have low inversion clouds. The high temp Tuesday will be in the mid 40’s. Wednesday will likely bring inversion clouds and temps in the low 40’s.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Seems like we’ve seen an awful lot of west wind this winter, and the next couple of days will be no exception to that unusual pattern. We’re at .07/.03 this morning, enough for westerlies at 15-18 from Hood River to The Dalles early. As a system swings through today, we’ll see the wind pick up to 22-26 east of Mosier, maybe east of The Dalles.

Monday brings westerlies at 15-18 in the morning, picking up to 26-30 in the afternoon, likely from Mosier eastward, but possibly from Hood River eastward .Tuesday looks light, as high pressure builds over the region, and we’ll likely see easterlies through Friday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Rumor has it that yesterday’s westerly wind dried out the Syncline enough to make it good. Now, I can’t prove that, because I wasn’t there, but that’s the rumor. Somebody should test it. Not all of you. Some of you.
