Yesterday was a little weird. When I sent the forecast out first thing, the clouds were west of Hood River, and by 8am, they’d moved past town, shifting the wind further east. I don’t think that will happen today. With a solid cloud line west of the Hatchery, we’re finally going to get that Corridor day we’ve been waiting for all summer. So, we’ll see clouds in the western Gorge this morning with west wind in the 19-23 range early from Hood River to Mosier, picking up to 25-29 and filling in from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon.

Tomrorow brings less clouds in the morning, for a little less wind. We’ll see 15-18 in the morning from Stevenson to Hood River, picking up to 17-21 from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon.

Friday sees a ridge start building across the northwest, so we’ll have wind in the 10-15 range in the central gorge in the morning, possibly picking up a little bit in the afternoon, with highs reaching 80 degrees.

Events tonight include the Post and Pinot (that’s the all-girls Post Canyon lap leaving Dirty Fingers Bike Repair at 1730), the Kayak Shed’s shop paddle (Husum at 1730), and sailboat racing out of the Hood River marina (race start 1830).

Tomorrow night is the Post and Pint ride, but if you’re not riding, come up to family man in Post Canyon for the Pump de Post, a pump track race. This is a family-friendly event, bbq but not booze friendly, and everyone’s welcome to come up and bring a bbq and hang out from 1630 to 1930. There are race categories for guys, gals, and various grom age groups, along with prizes, and all the proceeds benefit the Gorge Freeride Association’s trailbuilding fund. Remember, Post is built by volunteers (toast, however, is made in your toaster), not government, so your donations really make a difference.

Coming up on Friday, the Disco Divas are riding the Whoopdee trail. Meet at the China Gorge park n’ ride at 0830.

Now, your forecast:

Yesterday’s big cooldown brought big wind to the Gorge, and now we’re in a typical summer setup with clouds in Portland and sun in the desert. That’ll give us 17-20 from Hood River to Mosier to start, picking up to 24-26 from the Hatchery to The Dalles in the afternoon with less wind at Stevenson and in the eastern Gorge and of course dying at the Hatch around 2:30. I was really hoping for more wind, for that big Corridor day we really haven’t had yet, but the gradient is only at .09 this morning.

Let me interject something before I continue with the forecast: Puerta de Angeles in the Heights in Hood River makes one hell of a margarita. It’s truly dangerous. I suggest you don’t drive there. The nachos score 7.5 out of 10, in case you were wondering.

Okay… sorry about that. Back to the forecast. Tomorrow looks pretty similar, with 15-18 from Stevenson to Hood River early, picking up to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. Thursday looks like 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River, fading a bit late in the afternoon as the upper flow turns more northerly.

Coming up this evening, there’s a pirate fundraiser at Stonehedge, benefitting the Gorge Groms windsurfing program. Dress up and show up between 6 and 9 for food and pirate fun. Tickets are $5 for kids and $20 for adults with all tickets sales benefiting Gorge Groms.

Tomorrow night brings you the girls-only Post and Pinot mountain bike ride leaving Dirty Fingers at 5:30 and coming up on Thursday, there’s the always popular Post n’ Pint Peloton mountain bike extravaganza, from Dirty Fingers, not to be confused with Greasy Fingers out of Sandpoint, Idaho… anyway, this week the Post and Pint is headed to Family Man, where there’s the Pump de Post pumptrack race going on from 4:30 – 7:30. The pumptrack race is going to be pretty cool to watch, and it’s a benefit for the Gorge Freeride Association trailbuilding fund so come on up and watch. This is a family-friendly race, so please bring your BBQ, but not lots of booze. The organizers would prefer that this event be alcohol-free. In case you didn’t know, Post Canyon trails are not built by your (oversized or too small, depending on your view) government. They are built by local volunteers donating their time, tools, money and energy, so every small donation helps.

Finally, a last-minute trail update on Gunsight from Tony Y (and thank you, Tony): “The dirt road from Bennett pass to the Gunsight Ridge trail was clear. The Gunsight Ridge trail has 15-20 downed trees along with 20-30 snow patches that have to be walked. What should have taken us 1.5 hours took 2.5 to arrive at Gumjueac. The road from there to High Prairie had only two tree crossing early on then it was clear to High Prairie with great views of Hood and Adams.”
