Frozen waterfalls, people. Go look at them. They are cool.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today looks cold on Mt. Hood, with increasing high clouds. Temps will be in the single digits. Wind will be light in the morning, picking up to NW 20 in the afternoon.

Friday looks cloudy with a few flurries and temps in the upper single digits. The wind will be variable, depending on the depth of the cold pool. Let’s call it light and variable (LTV) at this point.

Saturday looks bitterly cold, with temps near zero in the morning and in the single digits in the afternoon. Wind will be strong out of the NE. Sunday looks somewhat warmer, with temps in the teens and strong north wind.

At this point, it looks like this cold snap is going to break with a Pineapple Express on Wednesday. But maybe that’ll change. Crazy weather so far this year…

Plain Old Local Weather

Cold, cold, cold. We’ll see increasing high clouds today. Maybe a few flurries under mostly cloudy sky tomorrow. No accumulation. Really, really cold temps on Saturday.

After all the excitement about ice in the forecast the last two days, models are now showing a more gradual warmup. There’s still a slight chance of ice Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, but unless something changes, we’re not going to have a crazy-awful ice storm. But we are possibly going to see another round of very heavy rain…

Gorge Wind Forecast

Could someone explain to me why I’m doing a wind forecast when it’s well below freezing? 30-35 today, 50+ tomorrow, 30+ Saturday.

Road and Mountain Biking

14 degrees this morning. That sounds cold. Syncline was a freeze-thaw mess yesterday because it’s in the sun, so please don’t ride there. Try Post Canyon. That should be frozen solid.

There are two cool events going on today. Caleb Trumball and his dad Jack have a challenge for you today: Meet at the Hood River high school track at 3:30pm for a 1 mile race. If you’re faster than Caleb, Jack’s donating $20 to a local family in need chosen by “Operation: Make a Difference” on your behalf. If Caleb is faster than you are, you are donating $20. I think this is an awesome idea, and a great excuse for a workout. I have an appointment at 4pm, or I’d be there, but I’d like to encourage you to participate.

At 5:30pm, head to Double Mountain for the MHM ski patrol’s annual avalanche dog fundraiser. This is always a great party, and there are awesome raffle prizes.

Have an awesome day today!

I think I fell asleep in a moving car last night. That never happens. No, I was not driving.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

No snow any time soon, folks, but that doesn’t matter, because the snow on the ground will stay perfect for a long time with near-zero temps counterbalancing the sun’s rays. If you like skiing packed powder, you’re going to have a nice time on Mt. Hood this week.

Temps will be in the single digits under clear sky today. Wind will be NE 30+ this morning and 20-30 this afternoon.

Tomorrow sees temps in the single digits under high clouds. Wind will be N 10-20 in the morning, becoming NW 10-20 in the afternoon.

Mt. Hood sees a few flurries on Friday with temps in the single digits early and dropping to zero in the afternoon with NW wind at 20mph.

Saturday brings clear sky, frigid temps, and very strong east wind to Mt. Hood.

Plain Old Local Weather

Yesterday’s model runs were much more interesting. That huge ice storm they showed for the Gorge on Mon/Tue no longer exists. But don’t worry: they show a new ice storm for the Gorge on Wednesday, coupled with rain for Portland and Mt. Hood. 7 days out… not really worth predicting, but still fun to speculate…

Gorge Wind Forecast

Don’t be silly. The only thing the easterlies will be good for this week is distributing the water from the waterfalls into beautiful ice sculptures. That said, here’s the forecast: Easterlies pick up to 26-30 later today, 30-40 Thursday, 40-50 Friday and 50+ on Saturday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your bike trainer is calling you… unless you’re good at bundling up. If that’s the case, go ride Post Canyon, which will be frozen solid and out of the chilly east wind. Syncline double-track was more like a river yesterday, so it’ll be too icy, but you’ll find good dirt, assuming it stays frozen and doesn’t thaw in the sun, on Maui and Moab. Betcha Nestor Peak will be good too, if you can stand the single-digit temps at the top. Maybe this is a good opportunity to ride Eagle Caves (Eagle’s Cave?) in The Dalles and Crawford Oaks near Horsethief Butte. Sunny and frozen sounds good to me.

Kayak Polo happens at the Hood River pool tonight at 8pm. And… uh.. I meant to say that Karma Yoga is today at Flow at 4pm.

Have an awesome day today!
