6/19 Gorge wind and events

Good morning,

Henni’s Kitchen and Bar is this week’s sponsor. In Washington? Hungry? Henni’s is here for you 7 days a week from 5pm-close. Chef Christiaan Erasmus earned his stars at many delicious restaurants, including Abruzzo in Hood River and Portland’s Fratelli. He’s moved on from Italian, to your benefit. At Henni’s, you’ll find curries, burgers, delicious pasta, and all sorts of mouth-watering small plates. Prices are quite reasonable, and the drinks are delicious. Like Henni’s on Facebook and know about the daily mixed drink specials. More importantly, Henni’s gives back to the community: Christiaan, a newly-minted citizen of the USA, put together the pig roast for the White Salmon Pool. Talk about giving back to your community… Henni’s supports White Salmon – you go support Henni’s!

Today’s forecast: For those of you who are tired of the wind, hang on for one more day, because it’s going to back off. Today, though, we’ll see west wind at 10-15 in the western Gorge under clouds. East of here, 23-26.

Tomorrow starts off with light east wind, picking up to 21-24 at Stevenson and Rooster Rock. Thursday starts off light, but we should see the wind pick up out of the west on Thursday afternoon. Along with the light wind on Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll see warm weather, with highs in the 70’s.

If you’re looking for something to do tonight, there’s the Hood River Triathlon club’s workout of 500 yards swimming, 7 miles on the bike, and 2 miles of running. Everyone’s welcome to come try this out. Also tonight, free standup paddle lessons and demos at the Ladies Supper Club. Meet at the Big Winds tent at Hood River’s Event Site at 5:30. This is weather permitting, so check the Big Winds website or give them a call to make sure it’s on this evening.

Tomorrow night, it’s the Post and Pinot women’s mountain bike ride, the Kayak Shed’s whitewater shop paddle, and the sailboat races out of the Hood River Marina. On Thursday, it’s the Thursday recovery road bike ride from Discover Bikes, more standup paddle demos at the Gorge Kayak School, and a run in Post Canyon with the Triathlon crowd, meeting at the bottom of Post Canyon Road at 5pm. Also in Post on Thursday night, it’s the Post and Pint bike ride.

This upcoming weekend: The Ashland Super D/Enduro bike race thingy. Closer to home, a tour of the Hood River County forestland with forest manager Doug Thiesies. This is for all of you who have been asking why the county is unable to make designated trail corridors and other forest-related questions. Sign up for this class through community ed, and you will come away with a much better understanding of how the county forest works.

Have an awesome day today!

Today’s forecast: The eastern Gorge definitely had some blowing garbage cans yesterday, just as predicted, with 40+ mph gusts on the river driving freightcar sized swell trains past Arlington. Today looks like a carbon copy of yesterday: same cold front moving through in the morning, same high pressure building off the coast in the afternoon, same strong wind in the eastern Gorge. The only difference today is more moisture in the system, so it’s raining in Hood River. As for the wind, expect 18-23 everywhere this morning, picking up to 30-35 from Biggs eastward this afternoon. The western Gorge will see gusty 21-24 this afternoon.

If you want the strongest, biggest, baddest session, it’ll be a repeat at Arlington today..

Tomorrow brings lighter wind as high pressure starts building into Oregon and Washington. We’ll have 22-25 through the whole Gorge in the morning, backing to 17-21 in the eastern Gorge in the afternoon. Wednesday starts off light, possibly light easterly, with the wind picking up to 17-19 in the afternoon.

Looking ahead to next weekend, it’s the Oregon Enduro series race two in Ashland. On the educational side of things, there’s a forest tour through Hood River Community Ed, where you can join the forest manager for a tour and a talk about how the county manages the competing needs of forestry, wildlife and recreation. The forest manager’s a cool and very informed guy who loves what he does, and this is going to be a good chance to learn a lot, so I’m giving it a big thumbs up. You must register ahead of time for this event.

Coming up tonight, free Tai Chi kicks off at Wilson Park in Hood River. The class is open to everyone, even total beginners, so swing by and check it out, starting at 6pm.

Have an awesome day today!
