6/25 Gorge wind and events

Good morning,

Columbia Center for the Arts, on June 27th, presents the cycling film Rising from Ashes, a feature length documentary about the first Rwandan National Cycling Team and their six year journey to the Olympic Games in London. It’s not about the bike. It’s about second chances, how our past doesn’t have to define our future, and the triumph of the human spirit over one of the world’s most devastating genocides. The story is told by Forrest Whitaker and follows Team Rwanda. Producer, director and Editor T.C. Johnstone will be on hand to talk about the film. The team’s top rider Adrien Niyonshuti rode in the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic and will be riding in the 2012 Olympic Summer Games. There will be a reception in the lobby at 7:00. with the film beginning at 7:30.

Before you read on, please remember that this report (wind, snow and events!) is brought to you free of charge. Nobody pays me to do this unless you do! If the report saves you time, money, keeps you in the loop, or just helps you have more fun, please take the time to

Junuary continues today, with another strong upper level low off the coast. That low will move east this afternoon, kicking up Gorge winds and bringing more rain showers. Expect west wind at 10-15 this morning, starting to pick up around 2pm or so, first at Stevenson (21-24), then through Hood River (18-23), and then out east after 5pm (26-30). Overnight tonight, the westerlies in the desert blow in the 28-32 range.

The low clears the Cascades late tonight or early tomorrow morning, setting up a windy day. It’ll probably be showery in the western Gorge, but east of Mosier, or maybe east of The Dalles (depends on where the clouds end up), we’ll have 28-32+ at sunrise. This is not a perfect setup – I’d rather see strong high pressure building in after this system, but it still will be windy all day. 26-30 seems reasonable at Doug’s, Maryhill, Arlington, and all points in between, holding through late afternoon. This isn’t quite the right setup for The Wall and Rufus, but it’s worth taking a look if you’re headed that direction, just in case.

On Wednesday, high pressure will give us clear sky and light wind in the morning, and then in the afternoon, we’ll see high clouds slide over the Gorge and a return to light west wind.

Tonight, there’s free Tai Chi at Wilson Park in Hood River. It’s fun, it’s relaxing, and you’re welcome to come try it, even if you’re a total beginner. Tomorrow night is the Hood River triathlon club’s practice at the east end of the Event Site, and tomorrow night, weather permitting, is the free ladies standup paddle club brought to you by Big Winds.

Also tomorrow, it’s the monthly Hood River County trails meeting. For all of you who are interested in how the trails and county forest land are maintained, this meeting is for you. It’s at 4pm at 601 State in Hood River. I’ve learned a ton by attending these meetings, and I highly recommend you come, at least once.

Have an awesome day today!

6/24 (late) Gorge wind and events report. =)

Well, this forecast is a bit late today. Why? Well, because it’s free and I get to do what I want. =)

No, because I was out ’til late, late last night, and thought it would be fun to waste away the daylight sleeping in. It was fun. Now it’s time to work!

Looks like we’re still trapped in the cool Junuary weather. It’s not going to be as wet as yesterday – we will see some sunbreaks this morning, but we’ll probably be back to sprinkles, and maybe even rain, sometime this afternoon. Tomorrow morning looks dry, but tomorrow afternoon we’ll be back to wet weather. Speaking of rain, we set a rainfall record for yesterday. The old June 23rd record was .25”. When I looked midday yesterday, we’d had .37”. So there ya go: it was wet yesterday.

The spring-like weather … well, actually, wintery – the snow level dropped to 4000′ for a while yesterday, anyway, this weather makes for inconsistent wind in the Gorge. We’ll see wind in the teens through the whole Gorge today, and then, as the next system moves in, picking up to gusty 22-25 east of The Dalles late this afternoon, maybe not until after dark. If you’re chasing wind today, there are Slingshot kite demos, courtesy of Windance, at Rufus today.

Tomorrow starts off with very light wind through the whole Gorge. Then the low pressure system swings east, and the wind picks up to 17-21 near Hood River and gusty 25-29 east of The Dalles late in the afternoon. West wind continues in the low to mid twenties on Tuesday.

In events today, Sternwheeler days continues in Cascade Locks, and definitely make sure you visit the Mountain Man Village on the island and check out the blacksmiths and other craftsmen. Also today, another Beacon Rock trail work party with WTA. Tomorrow night brings free Tai Chi at Wilson Park in Hood River from 6pm to 7pm and then on Tuesday, it’s the Hood River County trails meeting, at 601 State in Hood River at 4pm. This is your chance to be involved with your trail system. If you don’t show up for the meetings, you are not allowed to complain / spread misinformation about how the County manages their tree farm. =)

Have an awesome day today!
