It’s one day after Labor Day, and that means it’s Local’s Day in the Gorge. Come on out and take advantage of the light back-to-school crowds in town, on the water, and on the trails! I’ve always thought this should be an official holiday with discounts at shops if you show your local ID. Maybe this is something we can organize for next Local’s Day?

This is also the time of year when mountain bikers start hunting for signs of rain in the forecast. Bikers, I am sorry to say that the next possible chance of rain is a long ways out: Next Monday. Even then, it doesn’t look significant.

There won’t be much chance for windsurfing or kiting today, unless you head far, far west to the salty Pacific. Here, we have a tiny west gradient, but it’s going to switch to east pretty quickly as high pressure builds, giving us light easterlies at 5-10 this afternoon. We’ll see light easterlies again on Wednesday, and after that, the rest of the week brings light wind, all the way through Friday.

The coast is really the best place to be the next three days if you’re looking for wind. You can count on 20-25 or more at the central coast with a 6′ swell at 9 seconds.

Coming up next weekend, it’s the rural rampage bike race in Hood River, benefiting HRVHS and HRMS. Teams of two race to twelve stops, complete twelve tasks, and can win cash prizes. Also in bike world next weekend, it’s the Sandy Ridge Enduro, the last enduro mountain bike race of the season. Make plans to head to Sandy and cheer on our local team, the Dirty Harlots, sadly minus Miss Heather Pola of the tutu, who will be in Whistler.

The wind gods must love the Cross-Channel swimmers; despite a .06 gradient this morning, it’s only blowing 5-10 or less in Hood River. It will pick up, but hopefully not until the swimmers are done with the swimming thing. We’ll see a slow rise in the wind as the sun rises in the sky, with windspeeds topping out in the 16-19 range near Hood River and Stevenson, picking up out at Doug’s and Rowena late in the afternoon.

For tomorrow, Local’s Day, we’ll see a great day for SUPing and waterskiing near Hood River, before afternoon easterlies at 3-7 near Hood River and 13-15 near Stevenson ruffle the glassy pond. Wednesday brings more low-teen east wind. If that doesn’t sound great to you, Wind Johnnie, today, tomorrow, and Wednesday all look very windy at the coast, with a 5-7 foot swell.

If any of you have gotten a flat tire due to tacks when riding your bike along Dee Highway in the last few days, please call the Hood River County Sheriff’s office non-emergency line and file a report. They’re actively seeking the person who’s been tossing the tacks in the bike lane, and they need your reports of damage to help prosecute, if and when they catch this person. If you were wondering, the charge could be either criminal mischief or vandalism.
