10/5 Gorge wind and events

First thing today, I’d like to say thank you to all of you who donated during August pledge drive month. There was never a day where I didn’t post a forecast, because every day someone donated. Thank you to all of you both for using this forecast and for supporting it! Remember that although it’s free for you to use, it’s not free for me. I put a lot of time into giving you an accurate forecast, and I pay for the hosting on this website. If you find it valuable, please take the time to make a donation to support what I do. Your generosity helps keep this going for everyone. I also send an email version of this forecast. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No more dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive, and you’ll also have a chance to win prizes from the sponsors. Thank you again for your support!

This week’s sponsor is Dirt Hugger, offering curbside food waste collection service for your business, school, office, store, restaurant or hospital in Hood River and The Dalles. All that food waste becomes awesome compost for your garden, yard, farm or vineyard. You can pick up that compost or have it delivered. If we as a society can’t make composting happen through our cities and counties, at least we can make it happen through a cool local business. This is one of my favorite businesses in the Gorge. Support them, please

Once again, it’s a lovely, Indian Summer, east wind day in the Gorge. We start with .14 gradient, enough for a quick rise to 28-32 at Stevenson and 30+ at Rooster Rock. According to the models, the strongest wind will last until early afternoon.

Tomorrow looks like a repeat of today. On Sunday, we’ll start with east wind at 21-24, but the wind will back off pretty quickly, so don’t plan your day around windsurfing or kiting on Sunday.

Monday brings light west wind, and it brings the start of a vacation (the first in three years) for your forecaster! I’ll do my best to give you a forecast every few days, but there’s camping involved (hooray!), so there will be (gasp) internet-free days involved in this vacation. It might just kill me…

If you’re not on vacation this weekend, don’t forget about the following activities: Today is First Friday. Come wander downtown will all your favorite local friends. Tomorrow is the annual Girl Paddle on the White Salmon River. For more information, check the PDXkayaker list on Yahoo.

Also Saturday, it’s “Take a kid mountain biking day” at the EasyCLIMB trail in Cascade Locks from 3-6pm. Coincidentally, Saturday, 3-6pm is also CGKA’s grand opening of Blackberry Beach in Cascade Locks, complete with east wind, BBQ, and beer.

On Sunday, you can come help me pack. Or you can join CGWA for a Hatchery work party. Yes, you, windsufers, this is your chance to give back to your beach. Clean it up, make it pretty, and get it ready for the fall rains (may they please come soon).

Have an awesome day today!

Yesterday was most definitely windy. Today, too, will be most definitely windy. The gradient is a little less this morning, but you can still expect 26-30 at Stevenson today with 28-32 at Rooster Rock. The east wind picks up tomorrow for 30+ at Stevenson and 35+ at Rooster Rock.

This weekend, we’ll have east wind at 25-29 on Saturday and easterlies at 18-23 on Sunday.

That’s good news for the CGKA BBQ at Blackberry Beach in Cascade Locks. Come on down and check out the Gorge’s newest launch and have some beer and BBQ from 3-6pm. Also in Cascade Locks on Saturday, and also from 3-6pm, it’s “take a kid mountain biking day” on the EasyCLIMB trail.

In the little river on Saturday (the White Salmon, that is), it’s the annual Girl Paddle, with class II and class III kayaking for women only. The paddling part is followed by food and drinks and a great raffle.

On Sunday, CGWA has a work party at the Hatchery from 9-12. Da Kine has donated some great prizes for this work party, so come on by, clean up your beach, and go home with some great swag.

Finally, another email went out yesterday from SDS reminding people of trail closures due to extreme fire danger, so I’d like to remind you of the situation. The fire weather could not be more dangerous than it is right now, with low humidity and strong east wind. All SDS, Kreps, Longview, and Hancock lands are closed. Please consider all trails on any private land closed at this time. Currently closed: Hospital Hill, Whoopdee, Hood River Mountain / Puke Hill, Nestor Peak. If you see an orange “closed” sign, do not pass it. Turn around and go home. Trails will reopen after significant rainfall. Sadly, there’s no sign of rain in the extended forecast. Pray for rain, everyone!

Have an awesome day today!
