Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

I’m looking out my window and at the cams this morning, and Mt. Adams is under perfectly clear sky. Mt. Hood: overcast. Alas… a system well to the south has shoved clouds just far enough north to take away the sunshine. You’ll have to wait until tomorrow afternoon or Tuesday or Wednesday most likely. However… we continue with this cold weather and dry packed powder through at least Wednesday. After that, models are all over the place. Anything could happen next weekend!

Sunday will be high overcast with a shot at filtered sun or sun breaks later. The free air freezing level will be 0′ this morning, 2000′ this afternoon, and 0′ overnight. Temps start in the teens on the slopes and rise to the low 20’s. A bit of snow moves in overnight and drops up to 0.2” water equivalent (WE) for a couple inches of freshen-up powder. Wind: light SE all day long. Nice!

Monday starts mostly cloudy, might turn clear for a bit, and then turns cloudy again and adds light snowfall. The snow level will be 0′-1000′ in the morning, 1500-2000′ in the afternoon, and 0-1000′ overnight. A trace of snow is forecast in the afternoon starting around 1pm. Overnight, 0.2” WE is forecast. Call it 2” of fresh powder. Wind: light south in the morning turning to SW or S 5-15 in the afternoon and night.

Tuesday starts cloudy with flurries but quickly turns clear. The snow level will be 0-1000′ in the morning, 1500-2000′ in the afternoon, and 0-1000′ overnight. Wind will be SW or S at less than 15mph. Call it “light”. Clear, cold weather is forecast on Wednesday with a shot at a little snow overnight. After that, forget forecasting. The models are all over the place. For example, 850mb (5000′) temps for next week are forecast to be somewhere between -4C and +5C and the precipitation forecast ranges from 0.0” to 3.0”. It could be perfectly sunny. It could be dumping rain. It could be snowing. See – let’s just wait to forecast (and make plans) for next weekend!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
