Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
It’s a sunny start to Sunday on the slopes. We’ll add in some high clouds later, but maybe that will help the snow surface quality. We then move into a cloudier, cooler period through this upcoming week. Snow surface today: hardpack in the morning with transitional snow in the afternoon. It just hasn’t seen enough time to turn granular, so there won’t be corn. Carry some warm wax with you! The weather will be clear this morning with partly cloudy sky later. The free air freezing level will be 6500′ this morning, 7000′ this afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. Temps max out near 40F at 5000′. Wind: light and variable all day picking up to WSW 20-25 after midnight.
Monday starts clear with a 4000′ deep cloud bank below the clear sky. Models indicated a few flurries could fall during the day, but the moisture isn’t all that deep and may not reach the ski slopes. Overnight, deeper moisture moves in and drops 0.1” water equivalent (WE) for up to 1” new snow. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 4500′ midday, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ after midnight. Wind: WSW 20-25 most of the day, SW 15-25 in the afternoon, and WSW 20-25 overnight.
Tuesday will be cloudy, then partly cloudy. Some light snow could fall, but again, the moisture won’t be all that deep. Tuesday’s snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1000-1500′ overnight. About 0.1” WE is forecast during the day, for up to 1” snow. 0.1” to 0.2” WE is forecast overnight, for an inch or two more. Wind: WSW 20-25 early, W 35 in the afternoon, and W 15-20 overnight. Wednesday looks sunny and cool with the freezing level maxing out around 3500′. Significant uncertainty is present in the forecast for next weekend.
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Westerlies of some sort or other are on tap for the next few days. Today, however (it’s Sunday) looks pretty light. We’ll see calm wind to start. After 2pm, a light westerly breeze picks up. Models suggest it’ll climb to 10-13mph between Stevenson and The Dalles in the evening. River flow is 156kcfs, river temp is 47F, and high temp forecast is 71F. Warm! Monday starts with light west wind west of The Dalles and 7-10 east of there. Midday westerlies pick up to gusty 17-21 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Later in the afternoon, you’ll find gusty 22-25 from Lyle to Rufus with 10-13 west of there and 13-16 to the east. High temp: 61F.
Tuesday starts with 5-10 at Stevenson and 11-14 from Viento to Arlington Atmospheric instability will negatively impact wind quality in the afternoon. Best wind will be midday, when you find 11-14 west of The Dalles with gusty 22-26 from The Dalles to Arlington. If the desert stays stable, westerlies pick up to 25-28 early afternoon between The Dalles and Arlington. A front swinging through after that turns the wind very gusty, but it could kick up the speed for a short period near Rufus or Arlington. High temp: 56F.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Clear sky this morning turns partly cloudy later. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 70’s this afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows. Monday will be cloudy with drizzle after noon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 60’s later. Light westerlies early. Moderate westerlies in the afternoon. 99% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks drizzly then partly cloudy with sprinkles. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 50’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows.

Cycling
Sounds like Syncline double-track is rather creek-like right now. It’s best if you don’t ride it. Post? Unknown. Whoopdee? Probably better. Hospital: full of cow poop! Don’t ride in the mud – you’ll damage the trails. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Also, there is logging happening on Underwood. Do not enter closed areas. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, and the gate is still closed at Binn’s Hill.
Local Events
Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!
Big Winds and Oregon E-Bikes are having their 35th/5th anniversary sales Friday through Sunday. This is in-person purchases only, and there will be music, food, and other fun stuff happening in the parking lot. This weekend is the Cherry Festival in The Dalles (Friday-Saturday), and there’s a gravity-sport downhill race all three days at the Maryhill Loops Road.
Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site. The Dirty Fingers Sunday Service rides happens at 9am – this week is the last one. They are fast-paced. If you are not, bring a buddy. The ride is followed by bike race viewing and beer drinking at the shop. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride.
