Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
Good morning skiers and riders! It’s quite a stormy morning on Mt. Hood, and models are rather inconclusive about how much snow we’ll pick up today. But pick up snow we will, other than perhaps a brief period of snain mid-afternoon. Snow continues through Monday into Tuesday mid-morning. After that: sunshine and a sharp warming trend. By Wednesday afternoon, the freezing level will rise above 5000′, and it’ll but up to 9000′ and higher starting Thursday. Update after I wrote all this: Meadows had to close today due to wind. That’s what NW wind will do to them! Timberline was still planning to run some lifts.
Sunday will be windy enough to affect lift ops. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and will fall to 3500′ around closing time. Models are all over the place with snowfall. A straight take on the GFS deterministic gives us 1.4” water equivalent (WE) today and 0.7” WE overnight, but the precip was staying west and (notably) far east of Mt. Hood this morning. Ensembles give us 1.0” to 1.75” through Tuesday morning, which makes that GFS-D number seem overblown. Let’s call it 5-7” new snow today and 3-5” overnight. That’s really guesswork. Wind will be NW 50 in the morning. The wind turns more westerly at 45-50 from early afternoon on through the night. Still probably too windy for most lifts.
Monday will be snowy and windy, but not quite as windy as today. The snow level will be 3500′ all day and will fall as low as 2000′ after midnight. About 0.5” WE is forecast during the day for 5-6” decent-quality snow. Overnight, another 0.5” WE is forecast for 5-6” more. Wind will be W 45 in the morning, W 30 in the afternoon, and NW 30-40 after midnight.
Orographic (terrain-enhanced) snowfall continues on Tuesday morning. By afternoon, the sky should clear. Expect about 0.1” to 0.2” WE in the morning for a couple inches of powder. Wind: NW 30-40 all day turns to NNW or N 20 overnight. Dry, sunny weather is forecast on Wednesday. If you’re hiking, get it early (like before 9am) as the strong May sun will warm the snow quickly. Wind: N turning to NW 20. Freezing level maxes out at 6500′, and temps rise to about 40F at 5000′. Sunny, warmer weather is forecast through the weekend with temps rising over 50F at 5000′. Whew. That’s quite the weather swing over one week. Have fun up there!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! We have quite the wild weather setup for Sunday. Things mellow out tomorrow with a more “normal” Gorge setup. Westerlies stick around through Wednesday, and then we’re on to sunshine, warm weather, and easterlies for a little bit. I’ve been working my way through this forecast, and while I was doing so, Meadows had to close today due to too much wind. That’s a good sign for wind on the river (it means the direction is helpful)… let’s dive in.
Offshore high pressure, an approaching cold front, and a huge low in the desert are combining for massive early-morning gradients. Pressures: 29.80/29.62/29.50. That’s 0.18!! and 0.12. Whoa. You’ll find wind, albeit very gusty wind, all through the Gorge today. We have to take the rain into account. As I was writing this, it was raining hard near Biggs, I mean Amayah’s, and POURING at Arlington. Despite this, it was also averaging 25-30. Models suggest the rain will stop at Arlington by 11am, but it’ll still be pouring somewhere between Rufus and Boardman until 2pm. Swell should be dry for a period mid-morning through mid-afternoon. Between Hood River and Rufus, the weather should be dry from 11am on. Okay. There’s the rain piece. Here’s the wind piece. The GFS deterministic calls for 35+ from Lyle eastward to Threemile or Boardman from late morning on. The ensembles are less optimistic, but still quite windy. At the Hatch, we should see gusty 21-24 early, 25-28 mid-morning to early afternoon, and 21-24 later. This setup tends to send wind speeds rocketing at Viento, which should increase the swell at Swell. River flow over the last 24 hours was 171-200kcfs (for epic swell at The Wall, and max current for sup foil), river temp is 53.24F, and high temp forecast is 54F.
Things mellow out on Monday as the ginormous upper low departs for BC, offshore high pressure holds, and a bit of a thermal component kicks in. The western Gorge, Stevenson to Viento, starts cloudy with 15-18. East of Viento, you’ll find partly cloudy sky and 7-10. Drizzle pushes as far east as Biggs through early afternoon, and that keeps the wind down. After that, say early afternoon, we’ll see westerlies pick up to 25-28 from Avery to Threemile with 13-16ish west of The Dalles. Models seem to thing the wind could reach 28-32 late afternoon from Avery to Threemile. High temp: 54F with partly cloudy sky in the west and sun out east in the afternoon.
Tuesday’s setup looks more stable. Offshore high pressure will be in the perfect position in the morning, but it tilts positive in the afternoon and could result in gustier conditions. Either way… we start with 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier and 24-27 from Lyle to Threemile. Afternoon wind rises to 19-22 west of Lyle and 28-32 from Lyle to Rufus. Arlington eventually rises to 28-32, and Threemile to 26-30. High temp: 57F and mostly clear. The forecast for Wednesday is low 20’s, probably centered near Swell. After that, we’ll see warmer weather and light easterlies at least through Saturday. Be safe out there today!

There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
With all this rain incoming, will be too muddy to ride without causing damage to the trails. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. Whoopdee flowers are in full bloom. Hospital Hill and Syncline have ticks, oaks, and flowers. Columbia Hills is full of flowers and open to your bike. Definitely got a Tack Alert going on out there right now – lots of good dirt. It’s trail-building season. Get on the HRATS mailing list if you’d like to help out. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
