Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Partly cloudy sky this morning quickly gives way to light snowfall and then a beast of a storm for the next 24 hours. Snowfall continues all the way through Wednesday. That’s followed by a Pineapple Express on Thursday into Friday. The deets of that are not yet clear, but it’s looking impressive. Until then…
Groom does not get any better than it is to start Sunday. Go get it. Light snowfall starts up midday and becomes heavier and heavier as the evening progresses. Near Mt. Hood, the snow level will be 0′ this morning, 2500′ this afternoon, 4500′ tonight (perhaps briefly climbing to 5000′ or a bit more) and back to 2000′ or less by Monday morning. During the day, we’ll just see 0.1” water equivalent (WE), for an inch of new snow. Overnight, 1.3”+ WE is forecast for 11-14” increasingly dense and then increasingly fluffy snow. Wind will be SW 15-30 this morning and will build to SW 25-55 this afternoon, SW 50-80 late tonight, and SW 40-60 after midnight.
Monday looks very, very snowy. If you like storm skiing, it will be your day. Wherever you area headed, bring a snow shovel with you or your car will be stuck in the resort parking lot! The snow level Monday will quickly fall to 1500′ and stay there. About 1.5” WE is forecast during the day, for 15-20” light powder. Thank you, orographic assistance! Overnight, another 0.4” WE is forecast, for 4-5” additional powder (or maybe more – thank you again, orographics). Wind: SW 40-60 early, W 30 from mid-morning on through the evening, and WSW 35-45 after midnight.
Another round of cold, snowy weather is forecast for Tuesday with the snow level around 2500-3000′. Total snowfall for the 24 hour period will be 8-12”. Wednesday daytime looks mostly dry. Much warmer, wetter, truly unfortunate (for snow conditions, anyway) weather arrives in the afternoon or evening. Enjoy the epic conditions between now and then!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
