Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Apocalyptic smoke sticks around the Gorge today, but it’ll begin to leave with the incoming westerlies this afternoon. Tomorrow’s forecast has wind, but also quite a bit of uncertainty. Same goes for Tuesday: wind will be here, but just how much is a bit unclear. Lesser wind is forecast for the second half of next week, which will be more marked by humidity and thunderstorm potential than river-level wind. Mark your calendars for the official Maui Fire Relief Hood River fundraiser. There will be all sorts of fun activities and a raffle.

Let’s look at today, Sunday, if you dare. Smoke combines with easterlies at 10-15mph for a few hours this morning at Stevenson and maybe Viento. Air quality readings are in the 217-278 range at the time of this report. Getting on the river is probably not the healthiest choice. The smoke sticks around all day, even when the wind turns westerly. By this evening, after 5pm, we should/could have westerlies at 16-19 from Stevenson to The Dalles, but it’s tricky to predict with this much smoke around. River flow yesterday was 108-186kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 89F. Maybe.

A good portion of this smoke should be gone by Monday morning, and we should return to clear air by Monday night. Thank the westerlies for that! Ensemble forecasts are all over the place for Monday, so this is a really low confidence forecast. Generally speaking, they keep the strongest wind near Hood River in the morning and between Lyle and Doug’s in the afternoon. The day starts with Dawn Patrol at 22-25 from Viento to Mosier. By mid-morning, we should have 26-30 from Stevenson to Mosier with 11-14 from Lyle to Doug’s. Afternoon wind shifts east – Stevenson to Hood River drops to 17-20, and Mosier to Doug’s rises to 26-30. Rufus picks up to at least 22-25 and holds. With instability in the far eastern parts of Oregon, you’ll find the best quality wind west of John Day Dam, or perhaps even west of The Dalles. High temp: 78F under high overcast sky.

Low pressure drops south from BC on Tuesday and interrupts the influence of our offshore high. This knocks down wind speeds, but it also keeps things cool. The day starts with 10-15 west of The Dalles and 20-23 from Avery to Threemile. The wind equalizes midday at 15-18 from Hood River to Arlington and 11-14 at Stevenson. As the marine layer finally burns off, westerlies settle in at 17-20 from Hood River to Doug’s with 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River and Rufus to Arlington. High temp: 74F. It’s worth noting that some members of the ensembles have quite a bit more wind, so it’s possible we’ll have a semi-surprise windier day.

Current forecast for Wednesday is 13-16. Thursday: easterlies. A weather system swings through on Friday. This impacts wind quality and predictability. On top of that, there’s a decent chance of thunderstorms. So, let’s leave this for now. Hopefully you find something good to do today in this smoky weather!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
