Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mt. Hood has picked up about 3.5” rain (as of Saturday evening) from this most recent storm, and that’s left the slopes wet, consistent, and fast. At least the groomed slopes. NWAC has an avalanche warning up for the backcountry. No surprise there! Rain continues Saturday night into Sunday, but it’ll be less intense than it’s been. Dry weather Sunday afternoon into Monday gives way to rain, intensity unknown, on Tuesday. We’ll be back to light snowfall Thursday morning. Mountain temps fall into the “definitely snow” zone after that, but there won’t be much moisture around.

For Saturday night, the snow level will be 8500′. About 0.4” rain is forecast. Wind: SW 20-30. Sunday starts with rain and clears or turns partly high overcast midday. The snow level will be 8500′ while it’s raining and 9500′ after it stops. Temps at 5000′ rise to the upper 40’s. About 0.2” rain falls in the morning. Wind: SW 20-30 in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and SSW 10-20 overnight.

Monday will be sunny and dry. The free air freezing level will be 9500′ in the morning, 10,000′ in the afternoon, and 8500′ after midnight. Temps rise past 50F at 5000′. Wow. Wind: SSW 10-20 in the morning, 15-25 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 overnight.

Tuesday’s probably going to be rainy, but it’s unclear just how rainy it will be. A 50-100 mile shift in the storm track will be the difference between a quarter inch of rain and a lot more. Suffice it to say it’ll be warm and rainy with moderate wind. The snow level drops by Thursday morning and stays low for the next week, at least. Unfortunately there’s not much moisture in the forecast. Fortunately there’s a lot of snow on the ground. Any maybe we’ll get some sun too! Have a great Sunday on the mountain.

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
