Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Sunday morning, and the wind is light-light-light everywhere to start the day. Gradients of just .01 and .01 don’t give much hope. But wait! There’s more! An approaching cold front and trough late in the day push cooler air into Portland, driving up the westerlies around dinnertime. Westerlies of various strengths look to continue next week as a series of weak weather systems move into the Northwest.

For Sunday, we’ll have nearly-calm wind or calm wind until 5pm or so. After that, the wind will rapidly climb to 25-29+, first at Stevenson, and then filling in all the way to Arlington late evening. Timing will be everything, naturally. Strong westerlies continue overnight as marine air pours into the western half of the state. If your timing doesn’t accommodate this, try Jones/Nuke Alley starting mid-afternoon for 4-5 hours of 25-29 before the marine clouds push in.

That marine air and the associated clouds will kick off some drizzle west of Hood River overnight and on Monday morning. Upper elevation air also cools, knocking down the cross-Cascade temp gradient by quite a bit. This leaves us with Dawn Patrol at 26-30 from Mosier to Arlington. It appears the wind will fade during the day, hosting at 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus, dropping to 20-23 at Arlington, and eventually picking up to 18-22 near Stevenson when the clouds burn off.

The low pressure trough moves east on Tuesday and combines with offshore high pressure and Portland sunshine for a day of moderate westerlies. Models are likely underestimating the wind, so here’s my guess: 8-11 from Viento to Swell to start. 16-19 from late morning on from Stevenson to Mosier. Wednesday currently looks like 24-28 in the western Gorge with less out east.

BONUS: Jones Sunday: 25-29 2pm to 6pm, less before and after. Monday: 5-10. Tuesday: 16-29. Sauvie’s Sunday: 15-18 late. Monday: 10-13. Tuesday: 10-13. Coast (north/central/south). Sunday: 15-20/15-20/25-30, W swell 2′ at 8 seconds. Monday: X/5-10/25-30, W 5′ @ 12. Tuesday: 20-25/25-30/30+, W 7′ @ 10.

Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour – June 30th

If you haven’t ridden the roads around Trout Lake, you’re missing out. These epic rides wind through forests and past waterfalls (and wild berries). Traffic is minimal. Cell service is spotty. And that’s why the Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is the perfect opportunity. Sag wagons. Repair support. Food. Water. Lunch. Dinner. Four ride options include an 11½-mile Family Friendly ride (just $10 to ensure accessibility to all families), a 51-mile Trout Lake – BZ Corner – Glenwood Loop, a 54-mile Forest Loop, and a 105-mile Infinity Ride. Click here, now, to get signed up today before the ride fills up.

Road and Mountain Biking

High Prairie down to 450 is open, according to Strava. Still only have one attempt on Gunsight two weeks ago that took 1 hour and 48 minutes, 48 minutes longer than it should have. So.. probably trees and snow, but possible to get through in some way… No guarantees! The Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is next weekend – fully supported riding in Trout Lake, including a 105 mile loop and a $10 family loop.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the usuals – by-donation yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon at 9 this morning, all-ages touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 11, and free art classes for kids and their parents from 1 to 3 at the Columbia Center for the Arts.

Looking at next week, there’s a beach cleanup at Viento on Wednesday from 10 to 2. Saturday’s busy as usual – the annual Mt. Adams County Bike Tour is happening in Trout Lake – you’ll want to get signed up for that now. Hood River has the Pride and Prosper Community Wellness Festival at the Waterfront Park on Saturday with a 5k footrace. Big Winds has free demos of Gazelle E-Bikes next Saturday, and there’s a swap meet happening at Windance next Sunday.
