Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Sunday will be sunny all day on the slopes, and then we’re into a round of snow on Monday. While Tuesday and Wednesday don’t look dry, the depth of moisture is questionable for snow on the mountain; more likely scenario is sunshine with intermittent clouds up high and some light sub-freezing mist or ice crystals on the lowest slopes. Most important thing today: watch Hood River local Sean FitzSimons compete in the snowboard Big Air qualifying round in the Olympics tonight.
Sunday will be warm and sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ all day and will fall to 6500′ overnight under mostly cloudy sky. Wind: W 20 in the morning, WSW 20 in the afternoon, and WSW 30 overnight.
Snow starts up around 7am Monday and continues into Tuesday morning. The snow level will be 6500′ early but will drop to about 2000′-2500′ when the precipitation starts. About 0.6 to 0.8” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. For 6-9” new snow. Another 0.1-0.3” is forecast overnight (thanks to orographic effects) for 1-3” more. Wind: WSW 25-30 early, W 40 at sunrise, NW 30-40 in the afternoon, and NW 25-30 overnight.
Tuesday starts windy with flurries and clears by afternoon. The snow level will be 2000-2500′ early and 1500-2000′ in the afternoon. Just a trace of snow is forecast during the day before the sky clears in the afternoon. Wind: NW 25-30 in the morning, NNW 15-20 in the afternoon, and WNW 30-35 after midnight.
Wednesday has some low-level moisture in the models, but it’s really unclear if that’s going to manifest as snow up on the slopes. Let’s not that we’re only talking about 0.1” WE; this isn’t a dire situation. It appears the slopes will be sunny most of the day, but lower elevations could have just enough moisture and just enough orographics to wring some moisture out. With the moist layer this shallow, it’s more likely to be a freezing mist or some sort of sleet than actual snow crystals; they take depth to form. Anyway, the snow level will be 1500′ in the morning and 2500′ in the afternoon with WNW wind at 30-35 early, NNW 15-20 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight. Stay up above 4000′, and you should be in the sun. Have a great week!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
East wind stick around for Sunday, and then westerlies return for several days. Sunday starts with 35-40 at Rooster and 15-20 at Viento and Stevenson. Expect Viento and Stevenson to climb to 20-25 midday before the entire stretch from Rooster to Viento drops to 10-15 this afternoon. East of Hood River, you’ll find 5-10 in the morning and calm wind later. River flow is 144kcfs, river temp is 37F, and high temp forecast is 55F.
Monday starts with W 15-20 west of Swell and east of The Dalles. By midday, the wind picks up to 18-23 from Stevenson to Threemile. Afternoon: 22-26 from Stevenson to Threemile with very gusty and sprinkly conditions west of the Hood River Bridge. High temp: 46F. Tuesday’s forecast is currently 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 13=16 to the east. It’s highly likely wind will exceed model predictions thanks to very strong offshore high pressure. Models have been hinting at a stronger westerly day on Wednesday.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling
Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.
