Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s another fine weekend day for skiing. Go up high, and you’ll find hardpack. Down low: wet granular. Nordic zones: wet granular with a big of a snap to it. We’re expecting fresh snow today, a little more for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, and then a sunny day on Tuesday followed by more snow on Wednesday. That should give all of you something to rejoice about!

Sunday’s kicking off with light snowfall. Snow intensity will increase this evening as the wind swings around to westerly. Thank you, orographics! The snow level will be 3500′ this morning, 4000′ this afternoon, and 3000′ after midnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day for about 3” of moderate-density new snow. Overnight, 0.5” to 0.7” WE is expected. That’ll be slightly cooler, but not noticeably so. Call it 5-7” of new. Again, moderate-density snow that’ll pack down into some real nice groom on Monday. Sunday’s wind: S 10-30 in the morning, WSW 30-40 in the afternoon, and W 35 after midnight.

Monday daytime will have intermittent snowfall, and Monday evening, for your Hood River Rotary night skiing enjoyment, looks dry. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning. With the free air freezing level falling to 1500-2000′ overnight. About 0.2” or 0.3” WE is forecast during the day for 2-3” new snow. The snow ends late afternoon or early evening and leaves you with skier-packed powder. Wind: W 35 in the morning, W 15-20 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

Tuesday looks sunny with clouds up to 5000′ in the morning and sunny at all elevations in the afternoon. High clouds slide in during the evening, and light snowfall kicks off around midnight. The free air freezing level will be 1500-2000′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and the snow level will be about 2500′ overnight. About 0.1” WE – 1” of fresh snow of decent quality is expected. Wind: W 10 in the morning, WSW 10-15 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 overnight.

Steady snowfall is expected on Wednesday, but models do not agree on how much. For now, let’s call it 5-8” for that 24 hours period with light to moderate SW wind and a snow level of 2000′ or so. Dry weather is forecast on Thursday and Friday with plenty of sunshine and low freezing levels both days. After that? Lots of model disagreement. Have a great Sunday, and also have a great holiday tomorrow!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Please do not ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
