Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Sunshine’s the plan for the first half of the day, and high clouds will move in later. That’s basically the plan for this entire week: intermittent periods of sunshine and high clouds as strong offshore high pressure blocks weather systems from moving in.
Sunday will end up quite warm on the slopes as 850mb temps rise to +12C. Sunshine in the morning gives way to high clouds later. The free air freezing level will be 11,000′. Wind: N 10 in the morning, WNW 15-20 in the afternoon, and NW 20-25 overnight.
Monday will be sunny. The free air freezing level will be 9000′ in the morning and will fluctuate in the afternoon. Slopeside temps remain above freezing but could drop into the 30’s. Wind: NW 20-25 in the morning, N 10+ in the afternoon, and E 10-15 overnight. Tuesday starts clear and turns high overcast. The free air freezing level will be 8000′ or so with temps in the 30’s on the hill. Wind: E 10-15 in the morning, light south in the afternoon, and NW 5-10 overnight.
This pattern continues at least through Thursday and possibly a bit longer. Models tend to break down ridges faster than reality does. That said, it appears we’ll return to a cooler, wetter pattern sometime late next week or during next weekend. Until then, grab some sunscreen and enjoy!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Easterlies are the plan for Sunday. Expect 20-25 at Viento and 30-35 at Stevenson from mid-morning on through the day. River flow is 163kcfs, river temp is 38F, and high temp forecast is 43F. Monday starts with E 10-15 at Stevenson and light/variable wind at Rooster. Mid-morning wind goes light westerly at Stevenson and turns back around in the afternoon. By 4pm, we’ll have 30-35 from Rooster to Stevenson with 20-25 at Viento. High temp: 49F. Tuesday looks very windy. You’ll find 40-50mph at Rooster, 35-40 at Stevenson, and 20-30 at Viento. High temp: 42F.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
Local Events
Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!
