Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Yesterday was quite the day on the mountain – busy, busy, busy. Today will probably be gentler. Meadows crew reports that the groom has come out perfect this morning “the best in the last month”, so it’s definitely worth a trip up to the slopes. Snow moves in mid-morning, and things warm up later. We’re back to snow mid-morning on Monday with dry weather forecast for Tuesday. Want sunshine? Thursday is your day.

Sunday kicks off with clear sky, but clouds arrive quickly. Snow moves in mid-morning (or earlier) and switches to mixed precip or even rain overnight. The environment snow level (as indicated by 850mb temps) will be 4000′ this morning and 5500-6000′ from late afternoon on. Why do we talk about environmental snow level? Well, for example, as I write this is 30 degrees in Hood River and would be snowing despite the warmer air aloft. Anyway, we’re expecting 0.2” to 0.3” water equivalent (WE) to fall before the snow level rises. Call that 2-3” of snow by 5pm. The precip switches to snain or rain around that time. 0.6” WE is forecast overnight. The heaviest precip is forecast to stay just north of Mt. Hood, but an unexpected shift in positioning could increase those numbers by a lot. Wind: SW 10-15 in the morning rising to SW 20-25 from mid-afternoon on through the night.

Monday starts with mixed precip or rain and switches to snow mid-morning. The snow level will be 5500′-6000′ to start. It falls to 2500′ by the afternoon and 1000′ after midnight. About 0.7” mixed precip is forecast during the day. 0.3” to 0.5” will be snow. Call that 3-4” of increasingly dry snow. Orographics could up the snowfall a bit when the wind switches to westerly. Overnight, models call for 0.1” to 0.3” WE. That’s 1-3” powder. Wind: SW 20-35 early builds to SW 30-60 mid-morning and turns to W 35 in the afternoon before dropping to W 5-10 overnight.

Tuesday looks clear in the morning with high overcast sky in the evening. The free air freezing level will be 500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ overnight. It’s possible a few flurries could fall overnight, but the clouds probably won’t be deep enough for the higher ski slopes to receive anything. Wind: light and variable all day becoming WNW 30 overnight. Wednesday looks snowy and windy. Thursday looks sunny. Enjoy!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
