Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Sunday, everyone! It’s another cloudy day, but this one will be different than yesterday – it’ll be windy! We’ll hold on to “enough” wind every day this week with the possible exception of Thursday. The timing of an incoming heat wave next weekend or early next week will determine whether we have wind next weekend or not. Saturday: probably. Sunday: not sure. Early the following week: easterlies, probably, but that could change. Before I forget, I have some stuff I”m selling: 7’7” x 121L Armstrong downwind SUP board used less than 6 times. $1900. Takuma TK Carbon board, 110L. Well loved, no repairs. $700 (but I gotta find my new board first!) Takuma Profoil 1900 with mast and fuselage and bolts and such: $550 (has some scratches, but works great). 853 steel Lemond Road Bike 53cm, $300obo. Hot Sails Maui 370cm skinny carbon mast: $150. Email me at twomirrors at g-mail if interested.

Let’s drop that speculation and look at Sunday, today. Early pressures were 30.18/30.08/20.09 for gradients of 0.10 and E 0.01. Models keep our gradients centered on the western Gorge today, so your best bet will be the Corridor. That said, we’re dealing with atmospheric instability again, and that could affect the reliability of the wind. You’ll find 21-24 early from Viento to the Hatch with 12-15 from Hood River to Mosier and 7-10 out east. Stevenson started the day at 10-13. We’ll hold that wind this morning and spread it to Doug’s, perhaps to Avery as well. Afternoon wind is going to depend on the cloud cover to some extent; the more the clouds burn off in the desert, the more thermal assistance we can get. 23-26 from Stevenson to Avery (20-23 at Rufus) is possible this afternoon, maybe a touch more, if things line up just right. River flow yesterday was 100-156kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast today is somewhere in the upper 70’s to low 80’s.

On to Monday, when I’m not working other than writing this forecast, yippee! We’ll start with 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 out east and 10-13 near Stevenson. That’s our morning plan. Shift the wind and yourself to the east in the afternoon. You’ll find 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River with 23-26 from Mosier to Rufus and 11-14 at Arlington. High temp: 82F.

An approaching front on Tuesday may impact wind quality. We start with 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River and quickly rise to 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Afternoon: 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 11-14 from Avery to Rufus. High temp: 84F. A frontal system Tuesday night sets us up for low 20’s in the eastern Gorge on Wednesday. Let’s leave it there for now. Have a great day on the river!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
