Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Sunday morning, and there’s not much out there in the way of wind or gradients: .02 (pdx-dls) and .00 out east. River temp is 65. Flow is 166kcfs. Morning westerlies at 11-5 near Swell and 5-10 elsewhere will probably back down to calm for a couple hours before picking up to 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River by 3pm. A weak front approaches north of us late in the day, taking the wind up to gusty 17-21 from Mosier to The Dalles plus Stevenson with gusty 12-15 from Swell to Hood River.

That front moves inland on Monday and combines with a weak high-low combo off the coast. I’d rather see that low out of the picture, but we’ll take what we can get, right? The day starts with 10-13 near Stevenson with 21-24 from Viento to The Dalles. The wind will hang out in the gusty 22-26 range from Viento The Dalles through early afternoon. As that front moves through, the wind will pick up to gusty 25-29 (maybe more, briefly) from Stevenson to Rufus with Roosevelt joining in late. Swell may experience large gradients with low wind speeds than other locations.

Tuesday sees high pressure build offshore as the day goes on, increasing the gradients. The day starts with 13-16 in the west and 22-26 from Mosier to Arlington. Arlington wind steadily drops, ending up calm in the afternoon. Rufus is a question mark, so let’s call it low 20’s in the afternoon. The rest of the Gorge to the west ends up with 24-27 in the afternoon. Wednesday’s models like the idea of calm conditions. Given the strength of the offshore high, we might actually end up with west wind in the teens.

BONUS: Jones Sunday: 24-28. Monday: 21-24. Tuesday: 13-16. Sauvie’s Sunday: 11-14. Monday: 12-15. Tuesday 12-15. Coast (north/central/south). Sunday: NW5/NW5/10-15, W swell 3′ at 7 seconds. Monday: X/X/5-10, W 2′ @ 8. Tuesday: 10-15/15-20/30+, S 2′ @ 14. Looks windy at the coast through Thursday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I went for a nice long bike ride with a good friend yesterday. Neither of us were confident in our fitness level, but it turned out all right. There’s a moral in there somewhere. But I wanted to talk about something else. My friend reminded me of Thich Nhat Hanh’s comment about the non-toothache. You know, you really notice it if you have one, but you don’t pay attention to the lack of one.

Expanding that, we pay close attention to pain, physical or mental. On top of that, we often struggle with it, wanting it to go away. That makes it more prominent in our experiences, paradoxically making it more intense. Eek. What’s a human to do. Well, instead of saying “I want this to go away”, you can just see that it’s there and direct your attention elsewhere. Repeatedly. Without beating yourself up when you’re drawn to the pain again. See, we’re wired to pay more attention to pain than pleasure – it’s a survival thing.

You can also spend time noticing the non-pain. For example, notice when you feel happy. Proud. Grateful. Loved. Calm. At peace. Pay very-very-very close attention. Notice how these things feel in your body, and give them as much of your mental capacity as you can. Do the opposite of what you do with pain. This will train your mind to bring up these emotions more frequently and also to pay attention to them when they arise. Think of your mind as a cat requiring training. It can be done. May you have a more obedient mind. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

High Prairie down to 450 is open, according to Strava. I received a report from Dirty Fingers that multiple known people have ridden Gunsight. Hospital Hill now seems to be a one-tick-bite-per-ride zone. That’s for humans, not for dogs, which are currently allowed, by the way. The now-open Borderline (133) trail in Post has 1-3” dust on it. SAD! We are at Fire Level 2 now, which means motos on Hood River County land are only allowed in Post Canyon. Middle Mountain and Pinemont are closed to motorized use until the fire level drops.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community events start with by-donation yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon at 9. Big Winds has free Faraday e-Bike demos all day today, and Windance has kite, board and foil demos at the Event Site and Spit from 10 to 4. There’s all-ages touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 11, and free art classes for kids and their parents from 1-3 at Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River.

Next weekend has some fun wind-based activities: Hood River is hosting Kiteboard for Cancer from Friday through Sunday with the main event happening Saturday at the Event Site. Cascade Locks has skiff regatta sailboat races Friday through Sunday. If you’re a local kid who wants to sail, check out the community sailing program in Cascade Locks on Thursday evening. Next Friday and Saturday’s also the Gorge Outrigger race from Stevenson to Bingen.
