Gorge Wind Forecast

An upper level trough (low pressure system) off the Alaska coast slowly shifts towards the Northwest over the next few days. The result of this will be cooler marine air on the west side and increased west wind. It’s important to note that offshore high pressure support is lacking in this setup. Expect gusty wind and lower speeds than gradients would indicate.

For Sunday, we start with 0.12 (pdx-dls) and another 0.06 out east. River flow is 280kcfs, doable but strong for Rufus, and river temp is 54 degrees. Cooler air in the metro area today combines with a heat low over the desert for all-day west wind. By late morning, westerlies build to gusty 23-27 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Desert westerlies stay in the 10-13 range all morning, not joining in the 23-27 range until after 2pm. At that point, mid-afternoon on, the Stevenson to Mosier stretch will probably drop back to 15-18.

While the heat low remains in the desert on Monday, providing for a cross-Cascade temp gradient, offshore pressure will be dropping. Result: less pressure to push the wind through the Gorge. Monday starts with 16-19 from Viento to Mosier with 7-10 near Stevenson and 7-10 from Mosier to Arlington. Afternoon wind may take a small dip to 14-17, holding from Stevenson to Avery with 10-13 rather east.

Tuesday is all about timing, and models have been speeding up the arrival of clouds and rain. If that comes to pass, yesterday’s prediction of giant westerlies will not come to pass. Instead, we’re now looking at gusty 22-25 everywhere to start the day. Max speeds look like gusty 25-29 east of The Dalles (remember that yesterday’s forecast was 30-35 near Hood River for a period). So, we’ll wait this out and see how the timing shakes out. In the meantime, get on the water today and enjoy yourself!

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Jones Sunday: 22-25. Monday: 15-18. Tuesday: nope. Sauvie’s Sunday: 10-13 late. Monday: 7-11. Tuesday: nope. Coast: nope, nope and nope (light westerlies) for the next three days with NW swell at 3-4 feet and 8-10 seconds.

Road and Mountain Biking

There are still lots of wildflowers out there, so please do ride right now before they are gone! Post feels like July – very dusty. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. There is a parking area 0.5 miles farther down the road. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
