Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Sunday, everyone! Yesterday was quite the day for the Gorge Outrigger Race and also for KB4C. We have another windy one on tap today, but the location and reliability may shift a bit. We’re back to nuking, or nearly-so, westerlies for Monday followed by somewhat lesser wind through the rest of the week. By lesser, I don’t mean not-windy. I mean not-not-windy!

Sunday’s morning pressure report is 29.95/29.86/29.76 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.10. That indicates you could go anywhere to find wind today, but models are not quite as certain as those numbers. This may have to do with the giant heat pool out in the desert that’ll knock down the eastern Gorge gradient later. We’ll open the day with 23-26 from Viento to Hood River with 14-17 near Stevenson and also from Lyle to Arlington. Models keep the wind focused west of The Dalles for most of the day; you’ll probably have to wait for evening for the stronger wind to shift out east. By late morning, we’ll have 24-27 from Viento to Mosier with 20-24 at Stevenson and 17-20 from Lyle to Doug’s. Models drive the wind higher in the afternoon thanks to the temp gradient (80ish in the west and 101 at Pasco) – you’ll find 26-29 from Viento to Avery with 22-25 at Rufus and Stevenson. All that said, we also have elevated instability (thunderstorm potential) today. Generally speaking, wind will continue with elevated instability until an actual thunderstorm moves overhead. The greatest chances of storms are late afternoon and evening east of Doug’s. Reading all that, it’s a bit unclear where you should go. And yep, it’s a bit unclear today! River flow yesterday was 126-166kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 85F. Biggs: 95F.

Marine air surges inland on Monday morning and makes it past Hood River. Head to Mosier for 26-29 right off the bat. East of Mosier to Threemile, the day starts with 24-27. Areas west of Mosier will be under the clouds with gusty 20-30 (less at Stevenson). Afternoon westerlies build to 24-27 from Viento to Hood River with 28-32+ from Doug’s to Arlington. Threemile: 25-28. Stevenson: hard to say… depends on when/if the clouds burn off. High temp: 77F for Hood River. 81F for Biggs. Also worth noting: if there is lingering thunderstorm activity in the morning, and this is entirely possible, you’ll have to wait a few hours for the wind to kick in.

The weather settles down on Tuesday. Expect 21-24 to start with 24-27 in the afternoon. Wind will be focused west of The Dalles. Wednesday looks similar. Models suggest we’ll dip to 17-20 for Thursday and Friday. Potentially hotter weather next weekend leaves space for all sorts of scenarios. As of this morning, it still looks windy both days with a big day possible next Monday. But you know how it goes – don’t trust the long range forecast. See you on the water today!

This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is under a level 3 evacuation order. That probably means Gunsight is closed at this time. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! Logging is happening on Hospital Hill. This means you cannot make a full circle – there is no connection between the front side and back side. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger/Crazy Fingers at this time. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

You have an unusual solstice-week opportunity. With the clouds and the chance of drizzle and the cool temps, you have a perfect opportunity to sow seeds. Replace your lettuce. Drop in another round of cilantro. Add some arugula. Carve out a little trench for some carrots. Water them, and you might just get away with once-a-day watering through Monday. It’s also a decent time to add some plants to your garden. They’ll prefer this gentle start to a harsh, hot-weather transplant. Happy gardening.
