Gorge Wind Forecast

Looks like we have a couple more days of moderate to strong westerlies before the wind takes a short break. Models disagree past Tuesday on Gorge wind strength. For Sunday, we’ll have a trough of low pressure inland, high pressure offshore, and a weak weather system approaching. We’ll also be under SSW upper level flow in the morning, which isn’t great, but that’ll be tempered by a low-level temperature inversion. All that complicated stuff means that this morning’s gradients of .09 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc) will result in wind.

Expect 17-20 from Viento to Hood River to start with 10-13 in other locations. Minimal marine cloud penetration to the central Gorge means we’ll see the wind pick up to 24-28 from Stevenson to The Dalles by late morning (early afternoon for the Doug’s area). Avery to Rufus will see 20-23 today, and Arlington will likely stay in the 10-13 range. River flow is 506kcfs this morning (too much for Rufus) and river temp is 55 degrees.

Monday sees a shallower marine layer, low-level stability, and high pressure pushing inland. This probably means we’ll see peak wind late morning with a bit of an afternoon die-off. Let’s call it 17-20 from Viento to Mosier for dawn patrol, 24-27 from Viento to Hood River through the lunch hour, and 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s for the afternoon session.

High pressure builds farther inland on Tuesday. The GFS takes the wind down into the single digits, but I still think it’s possible we’ll see morning wind at 13-16 (Viento to Swell) and afternoon 10-13. After that, we have some disagreement in the models. I do always like to look long-range, just for fun. The GFS has a big day on Saturday, and the ECMWF has a big day next Sunday. I’m not relying on those forecasts, and neither should you. It’s just for fun!

Road and Mountain Biking

Not much to report here. Knebal, Eightmile, Surveyor’s, Bottle Prairie and Lewis River are open. There are lots of ticks and cow poo on hospital hill. No dogs are allowed there at this time because the cows are out. The Sisters Stampede bike race is next Sunday. The builder of the Whoopdee Trail is selling his house here in Hood River, so you can support local trails by purchasing it.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with a sports swap meet at Windance – sellers should arrive starting at 7, and buyers will want to be there starting around 8. There’s by-donation yoga this morning at Samadhi in White Salmon at 9, pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 11, and free art classes for kids from 1 to 3 at Columbia Center for the arts – parents need to be there with the kids.

Looking at next weekend, it’s Pioneer Days in Lyle on Saturday. Sunday is the Sisters Stampede Mountain Bike race down in Sisters.
