Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Active and unsettled weather is the plan for, oh, the next month or so. High pressure well offshore will contribute to synoptic-scale gradients and, for much of the time, keep some sort of westerlies going.

A front moved through early this morning, as did an accompanying low. Offshore high pressure is entrenched well out in the Pacific. This has pressures at 29.72/29.62/29.60 this morning for 0.10 and 0.02. Westerlies are generally in the 16-19 range except near Doug’s, where it’s lighter as usual – 10-13 or so. Westerlies pick up to 24-27 from Lyle to Arlington by late morning or early afternoon and stick around until late afternoon. The western Gorge will be drizzly much of the time with gusty 10-20 possible. River flow readings are 65-87kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is just 53F.

Sunday will be quite chilly and not so windy to start: upper 30’s with 11-14 all through the Gorge. The wind drops to 7-10 midday and returns at 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles for a couple hours in the afternoon. High temp: 57F. Monday will be drizzly all the way to Arlington much of the day, which will affect the wind. It’ll be light or calm to start. Models suggest 24-27 from Avery to Arlington from early-mid afternoon on. High temp: 55F. Due to model disagreement, we’ll leave it here for now!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Looks like we had a trace or an inch or so of snow at 5000′ last night, and there’s more snow in the forecast for the next several days. Oh boy are the mountains going to look pretty when they emerge from the clouds! We’re not expecting enough snow yet for ski season, but if you look at the webcams, you’ll probably have a smile on your face!

For Saturday, the snow level will be 4000′ with snow during the day. It’ll taper off overnight. About 0.4-0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today for 3-4” fresh at 5000′. Wind will be NW 20-30 in the morning, NW 30-35 in the afternoon, and NW 15-20 overnight.

A few flurries in the wee hours of Sunday give way to clear sky during the day and clouds overnight. The free air freezing level will be 4000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: NW 15-20 in the morning, W 15 in the afternoon, and WSW 25-35 ahead of the next system overnight.

Monday starts with cloudy sky and rain that transitions to mixed precip midday. Snow returns overnight. The snow level will be 8000′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, 5000′ in the evening, and 3500′ overnight. About 0.7” WE is forecast during the day. That’ll be rain, then mixed precip, then wet snow, but mostly won’t be snow unless we’re talking way-up-high. Call it an inch at 5000′, at best. Overnight, another 0.1” WE is forecast for just one more inch of wet snow. Wind: WSW 30-35 in the morning, NW 35-40 in the afternoon, and WNW 25 overnight. Actually, looking at those wind speeds, let’s call it 1-3” fresh at 5000′ thanks to orographic assistance.

Light snowfall continues on Tuesday with the snow level fluctuating between 3500′ and 5000′. The deterministic GFS brings in quite a bit of snow Tuesday into Wednesday, but the ensembles are far from agreeing with this, as much as I’d vote for this outcome and you would too! Let’s leave the forecast for now and wait for more clarity. Have a great day!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The annual Winter Weather Conference is this morning at OMSI. Teacup has a work party scheduled for today. Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

Hood River picked up 0.6” rain yesterday, which might just be enough to make the trails too slick and muddy to ride! Give it a few hours for the rain to soak in./ Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding.

The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. In theory, the Courtney Road closure was to end October 15th. Lemme know if you know if it has reopened. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
