Saturday: wild weather day. #laurawouldgo

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation, and all land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. All hotels and short-term rentals are still closed in Hood River to non-essential travelers. Recreate and go home. If you live in a place that’s still under a stay at home order, stay home – follow the guidance of where you live, not where you want to go. Thank you!

Holy moly. Quite a day in the weather world. Not only are we expecting very strong, gusty westerlies, we’re also set up for severe thunderstorms later in the day! After today (it’s Saturday) things mellow way, way out.

So, Saturday. As you may have noticed, it’s windy. Gradients at 7am were 0.17 (pdx-dls) with light east gradients out east. With a very strong and organized low pressure system (like the Mob) moving into eastern Oregon today, that’s not the place to be, unless you have the patience to wait until after 5pm. So, as that low center moves closer, gradients and wind increase. So does the chance of thunderstorms with the heat increasing as the day goes on.

West of Avery or so, we’ll see 25-30 this morning (with 35-40 at Viento, of course!) building to 40-50 early afternoon and then dropping in the evening. Stevenson seems to be having some trouble – perhaps there’s too much cloudiness, rain, and marine air there? Eastern Gorge sites will have two concerns: the presence of the low and thunderstorms. If you wait until late afternoon or evening, you *might* get a 40-50mph shot at Arlington or Threemile. I wouldn’t bank on that one if I were you. Now, what’s open? Every launch site except Rowena. Please respect social distancing requirements, because crowding looks back and may result in closures. River flow is an astounding 395kcfs (too much for the Rufus stretch) and temp is 56 degrees. Be prepared for strong current. Experts only today, please!

Also, please pick a play partner and keep them in sight. Consider a helmet and PFD today, and also consider going at 50% rather than 100%. People have been separated from their gear, and people have died in similar conditions here in the Gorge. Don’t take 30-50mph wind lightly. Also: enjoy the fuck out of it!

On to Sunday: 10-13 in the cloudy western gorge and 24-28 in the eastern Gorge, but only to start the day. As high pressure rebuilds and that low pressure system exits to the north, the sky will clear and the wind will back off. Expect 17-20mph from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon with 11-14 farther east. Monday starts with light west wind, builds to 10-13 midday, and then picks up to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles.
