Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Variable, transitional snow is present for your Saturday slopeside fun. That gives way to a drizzly day on Sunday and light snowfall on Monday. After that, welcome the warm and sunny weather with open arms!

Saturday kicks off with clouds and a bit of fog or mist. By afternoon, we should have partly cloudy sky, but some light rain is likely overnight. The snow level will be 6500′ all day and will rise to 7000′ after midnight. Just a trace of rain is forecast. Wind: NW 20-30 early fades to NW 10-15 late morning, W 10 in the afternoon, and SW 5-15 overnight.

Sunday looks drizzly in the morning and clear in the afternoon. Light snow returns overnight. The snow level will be 7000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ after midnight. About 0.1” to 0.2” rain is forecast in the morning. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) snow is forecast overnight. Call that an inch or two of new. Wind: SW 5-15 in the morning builds to SW 20-35 in the afternoon, WSW 25-30 in the evening, and W 25 after midnight.

Snow continues through midday or early afternoon Monday. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and when the sky clears overnight, the free air freezing level will drop to 1000-1500′. About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day. Orographics could up that just a bit. Call it 2-3” new snow. Wind: W 25 in the morning, NW 20-30 in the afternoon, and NW 15-25 overnight. Tuesday starts chilly but sees temps rise to 40 or so in the afternoon. From then on, it’s game on spring skiing at least through next Saturday (which happens to be the Pond Skim at Meadows). Welcome to spring, finally!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much at all will happen in wind world on Saturday, but we’ll see the wind pick up for Sunday and Monday. Models hint at sunny, warm weather from Wednesday onward. The location of the ridge of high pressure will determine what we see for wind. More than likely, we’re looking at light wind and easterlies, but you probably won’t be complaining when it’s 75 and sunny!

Let’s look at Saturday: a whole lotta nothing. Light and variable wind all day. River flow readings yesterday (past performance IS indicative of future performance) were 103-147kcfs, river temp is 48F, and high temp forecast is mid 60’s. Sunday starts out calm. A weather system swings through and high pressure starts to build offshore. By late morning, we’ll have gusty 14-17 and showers in the western Gorge with gusty 20-23 from Doug’s to Rufus. Models like the idea of gusty 24-28 from Doug’s to Arlington in the afternoon. It’s gonna be gusty. High temp: 58F. Monday should be less gusty as offshore high pressure exerts more influence. We starts with 7-10 all through the Gorge. Late morning wind rises to 20-23 from Mosier to Rufus. Afternoon: 17-20 from Stevenson (drizzly) to Hood River with 24-28+ from Mosier to Rufus. High temp: 58F. Light to moderate westerlies are still possible Wednesday (65-70F), and then we’ll likely to see a switch to easterlies as high pressure pushes inland. Buy hey, I am personally most interested in 75 degrees at this point, wind or no wind. Hopefully you can make the best of it too!

Sunday will be drizzly in the morning and mostly cloudy with scattered mist/sprinkles in the afternoon. Temps start in the upper 40’s and rise to the upper 50’s. Very light west wind early. Moderate westerlies in the afternoon. 42% chance of rainbows. Monday will be mostly cloudy in the morning, partly cloudy in the afternoon, and mostly clear overnight. On April 30th, SheroDigs will be working on trails in Post Canyon. If you’re interested (no cis-dudes, sorry), email sherodigshoodriver@gmail.com. Space is limited.

This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. My understanding is that Post Canyon is snow-free to the top of Borderline. IT’s been raining on and off. If it rained more than 0.1”, it’s likely to be slick and muddy. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. With rain often stopping on the west side of Hood River, you may have better luck at Whoopdee or Syncline or Hospital Hill (which is full of ticks and poison oak). Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
