Saturday: these precip types are possible on mt. hood tonight…

Mother Nature didn’t cooperate last night (but hey, at least there aren’t icing delays), and she probably won’t cooperate tonight. But there’s a nice dry window to get some turns, and plenty of sunshine next week!

Meet Temira,
your Gorge and Mt. Hood forecaster

Temira with a giant pumpkin at Mt. Hood and Columbia Gorge

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of what the Gorge has to offer: riding river swell on a foil or windsurf board, carving fresh lines through the snow, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

That’s why in 2006, Temira took it upon themselves to create the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Inaccurate predictions had left too many fellow adventurers caught off-guard and in harm’s way. Temira was determined to change that. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and travelers through the Gorge. With their guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and stay safer on the water, snow, and trails.

But the story doesn’t end there. Temira also authors the TATAS Facebook page – the Gorge’s premier source for microclimate forecasts. When winter storms, extreme heat, or other hazardous conditions (avalanches on SR-14 and I-84, for example!) threaten, this community lifeline becomes a vital resource for locals and visitors alike, helping to keep everyone safe.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today's snow forecast visualization
“Time for a pow-pow plot twist! Mother Nature’s playing ice, ice, baby with a side of snain drama. While 5000′ is getting the mixed-up treatment, the upper mountain could score up to a foot of fresh stuff in 24 hours – if you can handle those spicy WSW 40-45 winds! Sunday’s looking like a brief powder pause before another round of snow sneaks in. Next week? Get ready for some spring skiing shenanigans as temps cozy up in the 40s. The Teacup Tea Party folks might need to rename it the “Slushie Social”!” – AI Claude’s Over-the-Top Forecast Summary

Hey skiers and snowboarders! Mother Nature refused to cooperate last night – most of the 0.4” of precip fell as freezing rain with temps as low as 22F. We should see some snow this afternoon before a switch back to mixed precip tonight. Another round of snow is likely Sunday night, and then we’ll transition to dry, warm weather for much of next week. I’m sure all the resort staff are ready for a break from shoveling and deicing!

Saturday kicks off with light snow flurries on the mountain. After a break in the precip this morning, snow returns this afternoon. Overnight, temps rise, and we’re almost certain to see mixed precip at 5000′. The snow level (well, the freezing level, anyway) starts near 3000′. It slowly rises to 5500′ tonight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast this afternoon for a few inches of new snow. Overnight, we’re expecting about 1.1” WE. That’s likely to fall as mixed precip; temps at 5000′ are forecast to rise to +2C (35F or so). That said, with very heavy precip forecast, we could see some help from evaporative cooling to give us snow. Anyway, impossible forecast down low. Up high, above 6500′, up to a foot of snow is possible for the 24 hour period. Wind: SW 10-15 this morning, SW 20-30 this afternoon, WSW 40-45 this evening, and W 35 overnight.

That combo of wind and mixed precip is likely to lead to some icing issues on Sunday morning. Fortunately, precip will die off and hold off for much of the day. It returns overnight. The snow level will be 5500′ in the morning, and will fall to 4000′ in the evening. About 0.1” WE is forecast prior to sunrise, for a trace of snow or just some mixed precip at 5000′. Daytime: dry. After 4pm, models call for 0.6” WE, probably as wet snow. Call it 3-5”. Wind: W 35 in the morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and light/variable overnight. The Teacup Tea Party happens on Sunday morning.

Light snowfall (or maybe mixed precip, as warmer air will be headed this way) on Monday morning gives way to sunshine in the afternoon. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning and 3000′ in the afternoon. Overnight, the free air freezing level rises to 8000′ under clear sky. It’ll be cool enough that the snow should snap (refreeze) overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast in the morning for 1-2” new snow or potentially mixed precip. Wind: light/variable in the morning becoming N 10 in the afternoon and rising to E 25 after midnight.

Warm, sunny weather is forecast on Tuesday with temps rising to the low 40s. Wednesday starts sunny and turns cloudy with temps in the 40s. The weather stays similar through at least Thursday. Models hint at this pattern breaking down heading into Friday or Saturday, but the details are far from clear. Have a great day on the slopes today!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Not much happening for wind this weekend, and then we’re back to easterlies for next week. Saturday starts with 7-12mph at the usual east wind spots. Expect Stevenson and Viento to stay below 10mph today. Iwash also will drop below 10mph. River flow over the last 24 hours was 109-166kcfs, river temp is 44.60F, and high temp forecast is upper 30s. Sunday brings light westerlies, less than 10mph, and only west of Swell, and only in the morning. The wind turns calm in the afternoon. High temp: upper 30s in Hood River. Mid 40s where the west wind shows up. Cloudy. Dry.

Monday brings easterlies. The day starts with 20mph at Iwash and picks up to 25-30mph. Stevenson starts with E 15mph and picks up to 20mph. High temp: low 40s with pouring rain in the morning and dry weather in the afternoon. Stronger easterlies and dry weather are forecast for Tuesday. The GFS deterministic keeps insisting we’ll see a big west wind day at the end of the week or early next weekend, but the ensemble members are not on board with this. Still, we can hope!

Cycling Update

Trails have been a mix of frozen, hoar-frost (unrideable), and freeze-thaw. When it’s wet and muddy, or when there are freeze-thaw conditions, please don’t ride, or you’ll do significant trail damage. Then peeps have to fix your mess rather than building new trails. Nobody wants that! Everyone wants new trails. Be a good steward, and pick a different activity

Remember: E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.

Make Today Awesome!

Whether you’re shredding fresh powder on Mt. Hood, surfing swell on the Columbia, or just enjoying our stunning home… remember that every day here is a gift. Make the most of it.

Have an absolutely epic day out there!
