Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Saturday updates: Meadows is suspending operations for the season to protect you. Timberline has no re-opening date, but as they are open all summer, it doesn’t make sense for them to “close for the season”. Teacup will continue grooming Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. If you are going there, please, please buy a pass or make a donation. Support them generously for being available for all of us! Meadows will also be grooming Nordic on Tuesday (that’s a change) and Friday. Please, please, please maintain social distancing. Do NOT carpool with people who don’t live with you.

Mountain weather this weekend will be all spring skiing. For Saturday, expect sun. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 5500′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. Wind: NW 15 early, NNW 10 in the afternoon, light and variable overnight. Sunday looks sunny and warmer – mountain temps will climb near 40. The FAF will be 6500′ early, 7000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ after midnight. Wind: light and variable early, SW 15-25 in the afternoon, and SW 30-40 overnight.

A pattern change occurs on Monday. Offshore high pressure allows a series of weather systems to move in from the northwest. We’ll see the snow level fall to 1500′ or so Monday morning. It will hold around 2000′ all day and then fall as low as 1000′ near Mt. Hood overnight. About 0.3” to 0.4” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 3-4” of new. Another 0.3” WV falls overnight, for about 3” of additional snow. Wind will be SW 30-40 in the morning, SW 20-30 in the afternoon and evening, and WSW 20 overnight.

Models suggest 4-6” of additional snow with the snow level at 1500′ on Tuesday. Flurries continue on Friday. There’s not a lot of agreement on next weekend’s weather, but the GFS is hinting at a significant amount of cold moisture moving in. Okay… if you are heading up, please be stringent about social distancing practices. I wish you well in these troubled times.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue for the next few days. If you’re going to the launches, please, please maintain social distancing. Don’t carpool with your buddies unless they live with you. For Saturday, we start with a .10 gradient from Portland to The Dalles, which indicates wind is coming. We’ll see a slow build to 21-24 today between Stevenson and The Dalles. River flow is 115kcfs and temp is 42 degrees. Air temp will near 65 today for a total of 107.

Sunday starts with light and variable wind. As a weather system approaches in the afternoon, westerlies pick up to gusty 21-26 from Stevenson to Arlington with 18-22 from Swell to Mosier. Monday looks drizzly or sprinkly in the west. The wind starts with gusty 10-13 everywhere. In the afternoon, it picks up to gusty 16-20 most places with brief periods of gusty 24-27 possible east of The Dalles.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Cycling

I received a request from a friend who works in the ER, and I’d like to share it with you. When you’re out mountain biking, you are risking an injury. Sure, nobody expects to be the person who gets injured and ends up in the ER, but it’s possible. If you get hurt and end up there, you’re taking away valuable resources from the Covid-19 fight. You’re also putting yourself at risk of being exposed. So, please don’t ride. And if you must, be cautious. Go slowly, and go places where injury is unlikely. This is for the greater good, so please consider it. And perhaps choose a road or gravel ride alone where you will be maintaining social distancing.

Random Morning Thoughts

I received an email from a subscriber a couple days ago requesting that I encourage people to support local businesses through this crisis by pre-purchasing goods and services. This got me thinking about the bigger picture.

We’re a country that thrives on individualism and what’s known as the Myth of Meritocracy: you get ahead because you earned it. In a crisis like this one, the naked bones of that story are exposed. It’s just not true. Hard work plays a role, but a bigger percentage comes from initial conditions, luck, social connections, race, and other factors. Because of Covid-19, many people will suffer and struggle through no fault of their own.

I encourage you, if you are a person who has any extra, to share. See a neighbor lose a job? Help them financially. Own property? Consider rent or lease relief for struggling people and businesses. Buy gift certificates from local businesses to help with cash flow. Donate the refunds you receive from local events. Fear so often drives greed. Let’s let our communal concern spur generosity, compassion and thoughtfulness instead. May you be well and happy.
