Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a mostly calm start to Saturday in the Gorge, but if you look out my window, the Nothing is slowly creeping westward. That’s a precursor to east wind on the river later today, followed by strong east wind for the next couple of days.

For Saturday, enjoy your zero-wind river activities early. Easterlies build steadily to 20-25 from Rooster to Viento this afternoon. River flow is 127kcfs and temp is 54 degrees. Easterlies increase overnight into Sunday. On Sunday morning, you’ll find 35-40 near Rooster Rock and 25-30 near Stevenson and Viento. Want more? Wait until afternoon when the easterlies are forecast to pick up another 5mph.

If that’s too much, wait until Monday for the wind to drop a bit: E 40-45 near Rooster in the morning with 25-30 near Stevenson and Viento. Afternoon easterlies look like 30-35 at Rooster. Interested in west wind? Models are hinting at some next Saturday, but that’s way to far out to be making plans.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Random Morning Thoughts

Mt. Hood Mountain Weather Forecast

Clear weather continues on the mountain for the next few days. Next chance of precip is on Wednesday, but that currently looks like rain below 6000′. Next chance after that is the following weekend.

For Saturday, expect a clear day. Free air freezing level (FAF): 1000′ slowly rising to 6500′ overnight. Wind: N 15-20 early, NE 10-15 afternoon and overnight. Sunday: clear. FAF: 6500′ rising to 11,000′. Wind: NE 10 dropping to light and variable overnight. Monday: clear. FAF: 11,000′. Wind: light and variable becoming SW 10.

As I said, the next chance of precip is on Wednesday as a cold front swings in from the north. As of now, it appears that up to .5” moisture will fall with the snow level at 8000′ early and 6000′ at the end. Long range models bring in another round of moisture at the end of next weekend. Prior runs had this system cold enough to fall as snow at ski resort level. The latest model run gives that moisture a tropical tap; the snow level is predicted to be around 8000′ (rough estimate). We’ll see if anything changes between now and then…

Road and Mountain Biking

**Alert** We have now entered freeze-thaw season. Multiple locations have been dropping below freezing overnight. This means that exposed trails will potentially be delicate and subject to damage, especially newer trails at elevations over 1000′. Please limit your riding to areas under the canopy. Lots of brown pow to be had! The next HRATS Post Canyon trail work party is on November 17 at 9:30 at Family Man.

Upcoming Events

Fun things happening Saturday: a trail run at 8am in Post Canyon and a free bootcamp workout at Sorosis Park in The Dalles at 10am. Sunday: by-donation yoga at 9am at Samadhi in White Salmon, Ping Pong ($5) at Skamania County Fairgrounds at 10:30am, and pickup touch rugby, all-ages, at the Hood River Marina at 11am. Looking at next weekend, Saturday is the annual HRVHS gear swap.
