Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Saturday, and it’s going to be a beautiful, sunny, warm day with the potential for a very colorful sunset if high clouds move in early enough. We’ll lose an hour tonight. Sunshine returns Sunday afternoon and all day Monday. After that, the general consensus is for weak weather systems to start sneaking into the area.

For Saturday, we’ll have clear sky on the mountain until the evening when high clouds move in. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 0′ this morning and 6000′ this afternoon and evening. Wind will be W 10 early, S 10-15 in the afternoon, and SW 10 after midnight.

High clouds starts off Sunday, but sunshine returns by midday. The FAF will be 6000′ in the morning, slowly rising to 8000′ after midnight. Wind will be light S or SW all day. Monday looks clear all day long and cloudy after midnight. The FAF will be 8000′-9000′ all day. Wind will be S 10 early, slowly building to SSW 25 overnight.

The forecast currently holds wet snow or mixed precip on Tuesday with .3” water value or so. Wednesday looks partly cloudy with snow flurries. More details as we get closer.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is the International Day of Awesomeness. The word “awesome” contains the root “awe”. Awe is a powerful emotion, one that often leaves us feeling tapped into something bigger, something spiritual, something overwhelming and, at the same time, comforting.

Awe can sneak up on us. For example, there’s alpenglow on Underwood Mountain as I write this, and that’s pretty darn amazing.

We can also train ourselves to find more awe in life. It’s not just an emotion of surprise. Like all other emotions, awe can be cultivated so it arises more frequently. The great thing about this is that you get to choose your source of awe. Pick something, and find what’s amazing about it. For example, isn’t it incredible that humans have created so many gadgets and works of art and philosophies. I’m in awe of humanity. You might be in awe of the blue on a jay’s tail. Or maybe the flips your kid can do in the park. Or the wisdom of your clients. You choose. Take a moment and let yourself feel that. Relish it. Stay with it for a bit. Do this every day for a little while, and notice what changes occur over time.

And while you’re at it, notice if there’s something about you that’s awe-inspiring. May you experience your own awesomeness. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Temps will be near 40 early and near 65 in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Next chance of rain is Tuesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s hard to say if Post is a bit wet or just-plain-perfect today. What’s certain is that 10,000 people will converge on it and Syncline. After you ride, come see a freeride mountain bike movie and help the HRATS raise money to build a super-sweet pump track. Hood River Elks Club, 7pm. Also today: epic, off-the-charts road biking and gravel grinding in the sunshine and 60 degree weather. In other news, the movie Ciclovida plays at Rockford Grange on the 16th. That one’s about Brazilians cycling around the country saving seeds. This will appeal to gardeners and cyclists. 5:30pm. Soup first.

Upcoming Events

Today is Saturday. There’s a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am. Today is the mountain bike movie “The Moment” at the Elks Club at 7pm. This is a fundraiser for a ginormous and super-rad pumptrack the HRATS are looking to build. It’s also The Dalles Mountain 60 gravel grinder ride today. The annual Rockford Grange Seed Exchange is today from 1-5pm. Meadows has a party at the Nordic Center on Sunday. The following Friday is the movie Ciclovida at the Rockford Grange. Set your clocks ahead tonight.
