Gorge Wind Forecast

People sent me some amazing pictures from The Wall and Arlington on Friday. Looks like it was incredible out there, and I’m happy for those of you who got it! If you were unable to get on the river on Friday due to the four letter “w-o-r-k” word, you’ll have another chance on Sunday. Looking long-range, we’ll have westerlies of some sort through Tuesday, calm wind Wednesday, and then easterlies Thursday and Friday.

For Saturday, expect morning westerlies at 15-20 in the far east and 5-10 in the west. Don’t be driving, because the eastern Gorge wind will fade quickly. The wind will eventually settle down to 11-14 everywhere. River flow is 120kcfs and temp is 56 degrees.

A strong cold front moves through Sunday morning. High pressure builds offshore behind it. This setup won’t be as stable as Friday’s, but it’ll still be good enough for strong west wind. Driving per-emptively would be wise, as the wind will be best for a short window from 10am to 2pm or so. We’ll start with heavy rain in the west. Wind will be 15-20 near Viento and 20-25 east of The Dalles with calm wind in the middle. As that front moves through and high pressure builds behind it, the wind will pick up to 27-31 from Mosier to Arlington with gusty and unpredictable 15-25 from Stevenson to Hood River.

Monday looks showery with west wind at 8-12 early and 10-13 (west) and 18-22 (Lyle-Arlington) in the afternoon. Light to moderate weest wind continues Tuesday. Calm wind Wednesday, most likely. Moderate easterlies (with sub-freezing morning temps) on Thursday and Friday.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Road and Mountain Biking

Given Friday’s rain, you’ll probably want to avoid Post, Hospital, and Whoopdee due to muddy and/or slippery conditions. There’s a trail work party in Post Canyon on Sunday morning. That meets at Family Man at 9:30. The next trail work party is on November 17th.

Upcoming Events

There’s a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am today. The Klickitat Run happens in Lyle this morning at 8am. There’s a free bootcamp workout in Sorosis Park at 10am. You’ll want to turn your clocks back on Saturday night, giving you an extra hour of sleep. That makes it easier to make the Sunday morning events: by-donation yoga at Samadhi at 9am, the HRATS Post Canyon work party at Family Man at 9:30am, and all-ages touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 11am. The Seahawks play at 1:05pm in Seattle on Sunday.
