Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The radar and models and NWAC stations aren’t giving much info this morning, but looking at the Tripcheck webcams tells us the slopes picked up a trace to perhaps an inch – it’s hard to tell from a webcam! – of new snow last night. That’s all we’re going to get for the extended period. The next round of snowfall keeps receding into the future as high pressure dominates weather in the PNW. It’s at least 9 days out!

For Saturday, you’ve got a couple of lifts open at Timberline and 7k of thin, bushy groom at Teacup, where rumor has it that dryland training scheduled for this weekend was moved to the snow. Flurries this morning give way to clear sky by late morning. Just a trace of snow is forecast. The snow level will be 0-500′ near Mt. Hood this morning. The free air freezing level rises to 1000′ this afternoon and holds at 1000-2000′ overnight. Wind: E 5-10 early, NE 10-15 in the afternoon. Same overnight.

Sunday will be sunny all day on the mountain. The free air freezing level will be 1000-2000′ during the day and will rise to nearly 8000′ overnight as 850mb temps rise to +1C. No precip. Wind: NNE 10 in the morning, N/E 5-10 in the afternoon, and E 15-20+ overnight.

Monday will be sunny and windy on the mountain. The free air freezing level holds around 8000′ all day as 850mb temps rise from +1C to +3C. Wind: E 15-20+. Tuesday looks similar but warmer. Even warmer temps, up to 50F/10C are forecast on Wednesday under sunny sky. Have a great day today, and continue with your dryland training!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday, with a flush of easterlies, kicked off what will be a long spell of dry weather and east wind. With all this cool weather, especially on the east side and especially at night, the temp of the Columbia is dropping fast – it’s already down to 53F.

So, for Saturday… easterlies kick off the day at 30-35 near Rooster, 20-25 at Stevenson, and 10-15 at Viento. They’ll hold for a few hours and then drop fast. By 1pm, Rooster falls to 15, Stevenson falls to 20, and Viento drops to 10-15. Afternoon wind dips below 10mph for all locations. River flow readings are 73-134kcfs, river temp is 53F, and high temp forecast is 45F.

Sunday starts calm. Easterlies begin building in the afternoon but will only be in the 10-15mph range by sunset. They’ll quickly build to 30+ after dark. Monday starts with 35-40 at Rooster and Stevenson with 20-25 at Viento. The wind holds all day. East of Viento, expect easterlies approaching 10mph. After Monday: just a long stretch of continued east wind.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Rumor has it that Teacup’s dryland training for today (11/12) has been recast as on-snow training. 9am. 7K groomed. On November 13th, Dirty Fingers hosts the Seahawks v. Bucs at 6:30am with a breakfast buffet. There are two events on November 19th. There’s a work party on the Indian Creek Trail. That’s 9am-noon. Email [email protected] to register. Also the 19th, at 6pm, Windance has Ladies Night for wind sports. All people who don’t identify as cis-males are welcome to attend (eg: non-binary people, cis-females, trans women, two spirit, etc).

Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

Now we have freeze-thaw conditions. Please avoid trails that are exposed to the open air, in other words, trails that aren’t under the tree canopy. If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
