Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

What you see is what you get for the next five days or so – intermittently cloudy weather interspersed with light snowfall and a few days of sunshine. Why? Because very strong offshore weather systems will be sliding to the north and south of us with the bulk of the precipitation missing us. At least that’s how it looks from today’s perspective. Up on the slopes right now, we have packed powder up high, hardpack in the middle, and refrozen wet snow down low. You’ll do best on the groomed runs. Nordic skiers: Teacup has removed 80 of the 100 trees that fell down; they’re still working on recovering all the trails. Don’t forget to make your year-end tax-deductible donation to them if that’s your thing! Also, if you want to bring in 2023 on the slopes, head to Skibowl for riding ’til 11:30pm, fireworks, a beer garden, and a DJ.

Let’s look at Saturday’s weather. The slopes will pick up 1-2” new snow today and will perhaps add some sunbreaks towards afternoon. EDIT: okay, it cleared earlier than expected. Now you can have sunshine on the slopes! The snow level will be 3000′ during the day and will fall to 2000′ overnight. Wind: W 35-40 early, W 25 midday, W 15 in the evening, and NW 10-15 overnight.

2023 kicks off with a sunny day on the slopes. The free air freezing level will be around 2000′ during the day and will fall to 0′ near Mt. Hood overnight. It’ll be a fine carving day for sure! Wind: NW 10-15 in the morning, SE 5-10 in the afternoon, and S 5-15 overnight.

Monday starts clear and quickly adds some high clouds. Eventually those clouds thicken enough to drop about an inch of snow overnight. The free air freezing level near Mt. Hood will be 0′ all day with temps on the slopes in the low to mid 20’s. Wind: S 5-15 in the morning, SE 10-15 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight. Looks like a darn pleasant day for carving the groom! Our next chance for more significant snowfall and a change of texture on the slopes comes Thursday-ish, but models are far from agreeing on this. Generally speaking, though, the patter turns wetter toward the end of next week. We’ll be watching. Have a safe New Year’s Eve!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Saturday’s kicking off with light westerlies all through the Gorge. Pressures: 29.82/29.78/29.75 with max speed in the mid teens at Viento. While models really don’t call for much wind today, offshore high pressure just might give us a surprise. We have a chance of 13-16 from Viento to Mosier. Add in scattered showers. River flow readings are 79-116kcfs, river temp is 38F, and high temp forecast is 41F. Sunday starts with very light west wind. The wind turns calm and then picks up to E 15 near Stevenson in the afternoon. High temp: 38F. Overnight, the wind rises to E 30 from Rooster to Stevenson with 20 at Viento. That’s how Monday starts off. The wind quickly builds to 35-40 at Rooster and 30-35 at Stevenson and 20-25 at Viento. That wind holds all day. High temp: 35F.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Teacup Nordic has a 4.5k/9k skate race on Saturday. Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

An outdoor related event coming up: Gorge Ultimate starts its Winter League January 8th on Sundays from 5-7 at the Hood River High School Lighted Turf, but will be in a gym if snow is on the turf. Sign up to be on a team by Dec 31st, or be a sub: https://gorge.ultimatecentral.com/e/winter-league-2023

Cycling

DO NOT ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
