Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Saturday’s starting out crystal clear with absolutely perfect packed powder all across Mt. Hood. Snowfall returns to the forecast tonight and sticks around through Wednesday morning. Expect high-quality snow – the snow level will hover at 1500′ or less this week.

Saturday will be sunny most of the day. High clouds move in this afternoon, and snow starts up late this evening. The free air freezing level will be 0′ this morning, 4000′ this afternoon, and 0′ all day. Thanks to low dewpoints, the snow level will remain 0′ all day. Overnight, the mountain picks up about 0.3” water equivalent (WE) for 3-4” powder. Wind: W 15 this morning, SW 15-25 this afternoon, WSW 30-35 this evening, and WSW 35-50 after midnight.

Sunday will be snowy all day and less so in the evening. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and back to 0′ after midnight. About 0.6” WE is forecast during the day. Orographics could add to that. Call it 6-8” dry powder. Overnight, another 0.1” WE is forecast for just one more inch of snowfall. Wind: WSW 35-50 early, NW 30-35 midday (could affect lifts), W 30 in the evening, and SW 10-20 overnight. It’s worth noting that there’s a big range in modeled snowfall for the 24 hour period ending Sunday afternoon. Models say anything from 0.7” WE to 1.25” WE. Reality could seriously outperform this forecast!

Light snowfall continues on Monday. The snow level will be 0′ (sorry, metro area) in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and back to 0′ overnight. About 0.3” WE is forecast during the day. Call that 3-4” powder. Same overnight, but fluffier. Wind: SW 10-20 in the morning, SSW 15-30 in the afternoon, SW 5-10 in the evening, and W 30 overnight. Another half a foot of snow or so is forecast on Tuesday. Wednesday could be dry. Temps will stay below freezing on the slopes at least through the end of the week, which means conditions will remain excellent.

Gorge Wind Forecast

All the iWind sensors are down this morning. Maybe they froze! We start the day with 30-35 at Rooster, 20-25 at Stevenson, and 5ish to the east of Viento. Mid-morning wind picks up to W 17-20 from Stevenson to Arlington and then picks up to gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Boardman. By Monday morning, easterlies return at 30-35 at Stevenson and Rooster with 5-10 in the eastern Gorge. Thanks, offshore low. Afternoon wind drops to the range called “light easterly”. Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
