Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
If you’ve been waiting for a crisp, clear, sunny day, this morning is your chance. High clouds move in later. Snow returns on Sunday becoming heavy overnight and extremely heavy and intense on Monday. After that: more snow until the Pineapple Express strikes on Thursday. Oh, La Nina. We do love you!
Dry weather sticks around for the first day of 2022. You’ll not find better groom on any other day, so get some! Dress warmly – temps will be in the single digits down low and teens up high. Wind: WNW 10-15 in the morning, W 15 in the afternoon, SW 5-15 in the evening, and SW 20-35 overnight.
Sunday starts high overcast and quickly adds light flurries. Heavy snow moves in for the evening. If you are doing night skiing, bring a shovel with you, or you’ll get stuck in the parking lot. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, 4500′ in the evening, and 2000′ after midnight. Just a trace is forecast during the day. 1.2”+ water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight, for 10-12” dense new snow that becomes lighter later. Wind: SW 15-35 in the morning steadily builds to SW 40-70 in the evening and fades to SW 30-45 after midnight.
Very, very heavy snowfall is forecast Monday. Bring a shovel to extricate yourself from the resort parking lots. The snow level will be 2000′-2500′ in the morning and will fall to 1000-1500′ near Mt. Hood by midday. Ridiculous amounts of precip are forecast: 1.8” WE during the day, for 18”+ of increasingly fluffy new snow. Another 0.4” WE is forecast overnight for 4-6” powder. Given the west wind overnight, you can add 50-60% to that. Wind: SW 25-45 early, W 20 mid-morning, W 40 in the afternoon, and W 30 overnight.
Additional moderate to heavy snowfall is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday. We then see pineapples headed our way. It’s not clear yet how many pineapples, but the Euro is really hyping up this storm. In the meantime, you’ve got some powder riding to do!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!
