Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a beautiful morning in the mountains, and it’s going to be a beautiful day of spring skiing. I’m going to recommend you get up there and ride this week, because models are starting to agree on a Pineapple Express event for the second half of next week.

For Saturday, the first half of the day will be partly cloudy, and the second half will be clear. The free air freezing level will be 2500′ early, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Wind will be W 10 all day.

Sunday starts off partly cloudy, turns cloudy midday, and becomes snowy after 2pm or so. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 500′-1000′ overnight. About .4-.5” water value (WV) will fall by Monday morning, for 4-6” of fluffy new snow. Wind will be W 20 early, W 35-40 in the afternoon, and WNW 35 after midnight.

Monday looks snowy with sunbreaks – the snowfall will be due to terrain enhancement of precipitation, aka orographics. The snow level will be 500′-1000′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and the free air freezing level will be near 0′ overnight under clear sky. About .4-.5” WV falls during the day, for 5-6” of powder. Wind will be WNW 35 early, WNW 15 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

I’m going to broad-brush the rest of next week: Tuesday looks clear early, high overcast in the afternoon, and snowy overnight. A few inches of snow will fall. Wednesday starts out snowy and then turns rainy. Heavy rain moves in on Thursday and continues, on-and-off, through at least Sunday. When I say “heavy”, I mean heavy and intense at times. The snow level will be way-up-there as Hawaii-sourced moisture slams into the west coast. As of this point in time, the exact details are unclear, but both the Euro and the GFS agree on the general picture.

Random Morning Thoughts

Humans, naturally anyway, have short-term memories that only hold 7-9 items. You can train this to hold more, but that takes a lot of time and energy, things most of us are short on.

I believe that this limitation can increase our stress level. See, most of us are trying to keep track of more than 9 things. If you’re not, you’re lucky, and your life is simple. Trying to track too many things can lead to stress about forgetting things. Lists and calendars are a way to address this. If you know you have a reminder outside of your brain, you can set aside the need to remember that particular thing (like the fact that Cadbury Eggs will be half-price on Monday) and concentrate on more important things.

Someone recently introduced me to the idea of a list journal. Each page has a list of items from a particular category. That way you can stop trying to remember lots of things and refer to the journal when you have some spare time to tackle some of those not-so-important things.

So, if you find yourself getting stressed trying to keep track of everything, help yourself by letting something else keep track for you. Sounds simple, but not many of us actually do this – we just keep struggling to keep track. May you be free from suffering. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Saturday looks like a calm wind day until the afternoon when we’ll have light east wind through the entire Gorge. An approaching cold front bumps up the wind on Sunday. Because this is frontally-driven, it won’t be steady, but it will be windy! Expect 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier early with 22-25 in the eastern Gorge. In the afternoon, the wind will be 10-13 in the western Gorge and 25-29 from The Dalles to Arlington, strongest from Avery to Rufus. High temp 55. Monday looks like 12-15 in the western Gorge all day with 23-26 from Mosier to Arlington. With high pressure building offshore on Monday, the wind should be steadier. High temp 53. River temp 43.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy out there this morning, and that’s pretty much what we’ll have today. Temps will be near 40 early and near 60 in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks partly cloudy early and cloudy and sprinkly in the afternoon with rain overnight. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong west wind. 51% chance of rainbows. We may see wet snow flurries on Monday morning followed by showers. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

The brown pow right now is most epic, especially in Post. I highly recommend you go ride today, especially because rain tomorrow afternoon and evening will mess it up. Dirty Fingers has a group gravel ride Sunday morning at 9am.
